CHAPTER 3 – THE LOCKER NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO FIND
Twenty minutes later...
Police officers surrounded Locker 317 inside the city's old train station.
Victoria stood beside Lily.
"Are you ready?"
Lily nodded.
She carefully inserted the tiny silver key.
Click.
The locker door slowly opened.
Inside sat a small metal box.
Nothing else.
Victoria lifted the lid.
On top lay a handwritten letter.
She recognized the handwriting instantly.
Emily.
Her hands shook as she read aloud.
Victoria...
If you're reading this, someone tried to kill me.
Don't trust the accident report.
Trust Lily.
Beneath the letter...
A flash drive.
A second envelope.
And a family photograph.
Police plugged the flash drive into a laptop.
The first video appeared.
Emily.
Alive.
Bruised.
Terrified.

"I survived."
"But someone inside our own company paid to make sure I never came home."
Victoria covered her mouth.
The room stood frozen.

An officer's radio suddenly crackled.

Victoria looked down at Lily.
"You protected all of this by yourself?"

"Mommy said brave people get scared..."

At that exact moment...
The station doors opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stepped inside wearing a baseball cap and dark sunglasses.

Pale.
A healing scar across her forehead.
Lily screamed.
"Mommy!"
The woman dropped everything and ran.
Emily wrapped her daughter in her arms, tears streaming down her face.
Victoria stood frozen.
Then she embraced them both.
The police quietly stepped back.
No one wanted to interrupt the reunion.
The officer turned to the security guard from the hotel.
"You almost arrested the witness who solved the case."
The guard knelt before Lily.
"I'm sorry."
Lily hugged him.
"My mommy says people deserve a second chance..."
"...if they choose to become better."
The guard wiped away his tears.
