CHAPTER 3: THE DAUGHTER THEY THREW AWAY
The boardroom doors opened.
Every executive stood.
Richard Bennett smiled confidently.
"Ms. Laurent. It is an honor."
The woman slowly turned around.
Sophia dropped her coffee.
"...Isabella?"
Silence.
Richard laughed awkwardly.
"Impossible."
"You died."
Isabella smiled.
"No."
"You just stopped looking."
Her adoptive mother staggered backward.
"It can't be..."
Richard forced himself to remain calm.
"You've done well."
"We're proud of you."
Isabella laughed softly.
The sound made everyone uncomfortable.
"Proud?"
She walked toward the massive window overlooking Manhattan.
"When I was sixteen..."
"I begged you for one night indoors."
"You chose the snow."
Nobody spoke.
She turned back.
"I survived."
"You simply lost the right to call yourselves my family."
Richard quickly changed his tone.
"We made mistakes."
"You'll always be our daughter."
Isabella placed a thick folder on the table.
"No."
"I am Isabella Laurent."
"The last surviving blood heir of House Laurent."
Every executive gasped.
Richard frowned.
"What is House Laurent?"
The company lawyer answered before Isabella could.
His face had turned completely white.
"...One of the oldest private financial dynasties on Earth."
Richard's knees nearly gave out.
The lawyer continued.
"They own controlling interests in half the companies we borrow money from."
Sophia whispered,
"No..."
Isabella opened another folder.
"I've already acquired every loan your company owes."
Another folder.
"I purchased your largest supplier."
Another.
"And your headquarters."
Richard's voice cracked.
"What do you want?"
Isabella looked him directly in the eyes.
"The same thing you gave me."
Confusion spread across the room.
She pressed a button.
Security entered.
Richard looked around desperately.
"What is this?"
Isabella spoke calmly.
"You have one minute."
Her adoptive mother burst into tears.
"Please... forgive us."
Isabella shook her head.
"I already did."
A pause.
"But forgiveness doesn't erase consequences."
She pointed toward the door.
"Leave."
"Everything in this building belongs to House Laurent now."
Richard slowly picked up a single cardboard box prepared by security.
The same way Isabella had once picked up her torn suitcase.
Outside...
Snow began falling over Manhattan.
Richard looked up.
For the first time in fifteen years...
He finally understood how cold that night had been.
