## CHAPTER 7 ## THE RECORDING THAT DESTROYED A MOTHER'S LIE

The recording ended.

---

But nobody moved.

---

The room was frozen in silence.

---

Marcus stared at his mother.

---

Evelyn Thorne.

The woman who taught him how to walk.

The woman who held him when he was sick.

The woman who told him every night that family was everything.

---

Was the same woman his father warned him about.

---

"Say something."

Marcus's voice was quiet.

---

Evelyn looked away.

---

"Marcus..."

---

"No."

He stepped closer.

---

"Not another explanation."

---

His eyes burned.

---

"I spent my entire life believing you were the one person who would never lie to me."

---

Evelyn's expression cracked.

---

"I did what I had to do."

---

Those words hurt more than denial.

---

Marcus laughed softly.

---

"That's always your excuse."

---

---

Daniel stepped forward.

---

"Where is the original research?"

---

Evelyn looked at him.

---

For the first time...

She looked afraid.

---

"You don't understand what you're asking."

---

Daniel's voice hardened.

---

"No."

---

"You don't understand what you took from us."

---

---

Khloe held Marcus's hand.

---

She was still weak from the attack.

Still recovering.

Still carrying their child.

---

But she stood beside him.

---

Because she knew something Marcus was finally learning.

---

The truth was painful.

---

But lies were worse.

---

---

"Mother."

Marcus said.

---

"Where is it?"

---

Evelyn looked at him.

---

Then slowly smiled.

---

A cold, almost sad smile.

---

"You really are your father's son."

---

Marcus frowned.

---

"What does that mean?"

---

"You think truth fixes everything."

---

She walked toward the window.

---

"But sometimes truth destroys everything."

---

---

Twenty-five years earlier...

Evelyn had not started as a villain.

---

That was the part nobody understood.

---

She was ambitious.

Brilliant.

Determined.

---

She believed she was protecting the Thorne family.

---

But protecting something long enough...

Could turn into destroying everything around it.

---

---

After Jonathan Thorne stole the Parker research...

Evelyn discovered the truth.

---

She knew the company was built on stolen work.

---

She knew Richard Parker had been betrayed.

---

But instead of exposing her husband...

She made a choice.

---

She protected the empire.

---

---

"Why?"

Marcus asked.

---

Evelyn turned.

---

"Because I had you."

---

The answer shocked him.

---

"You were six years old."

---

"Your father wanted to destroy everything."

---

Marcus shook his head.

---

"He wanted justice."

---

"No."

Evelyn snapped.

---

"He wanted revenge."

---

The room went quiet.

---

"He wanted to drag your name through the mud."

---

"He wanted you to lose everything."

---

---

Marcus stared.

---

"Because of what Dad did?"

---

Evelyn said nothing.

---

And again...

The silence answered.

---

---

"So you knew."

---

Marcus whispered.

---

"You knew he was guilty."

---

Evelyn looked down.

---

"Yes."

---

The word was barely audible.

---

But it destroyed him.

---

---

Khloe closed her eyes.

---

Even after everything...

Hearing it still hurt.

---

---

"Where is my mother?"

Khloe suddenly asked.

---

Everyone turned.

---

Evelyn looked at her.

---

"I don't know."

---

Khloe's expression changed.

---

"You're lying."

---

A pause.

---

Then Evelyn said:

---

"She isn't dead."

---

The room went silent.

---

Again.

---

---

Marcus looked at Khloe.

---

"Your mother is alive."

---

Khloe's eyes filled with tears.

---

All her life...

She believed she had been abandoned.

---

But now...

Everyone she lost seemed to be returning from the dead.

---

---

"Where is she?"

Khloe asked.

---

Evelyn didn't answer.

---

Instead, she looked at Marcus.

---

"Do you really want to know?"

---

Marcus stepped forward.

---

"Yes."

---

Evelyn nodded.

---

"Then you need to understand something."

---

She reached into her coat.

---

Pulled out a small black drive.

---

"I have the location."

---

Daniel immediately moved.

---

But the guards raised their weapons.

---

Marcus's eyes hardened.

---

"Enough."

---

The room became tense.

---

Evelyn placed the drive on the table.

---

"The original research is there."

---

"The evidence."

---

"Your father's final work."

---

"And Elena Parker."

---

Khloe stopped breathing.

---

"My mother?"

---

Evelyn nodded.

---

"She has been protecting it for twenty years."

---

---

Marcus looked at the drive.

---

"Why give this to us?"

---

Evelyn's expression changed.

---

For the first time...

She looked tired.

---

"Because I made a mistake."

---

Nobody expected those words.

---

"I thought protecting the empire would protect my family."

---

A tear appeared.

---

"But all I did was destroy both."

---

---

Marcus stared.

---

He wanted to hate her.

---

He had every reason.

---

But seeing his mother finally admit the truth...

Made everything more complicated.

---

---

Then suddenly...

A gunshot exploded.

---

The window behind Evelyn shattered.

---

Everyone dropped.

---

Marcus grabbed Khloe and pulled her down.

---

Daniel moved toward the hallway.

---

The guards reacted too late.

---

---

When the noise stopped...

Someone was lying on the floor.

---

Not Marcus.

Not Khloe.

---

Evelyn.

---

Blood spread across her white blouse.

---

Marcus froze.

---

"Mom!"

---

He rushed toward her.

---

For one second...

He forgot everything.

---

The lies.

The betrayal.

The anger.

---

She was still his mother.

---

Evelyn grabbed his hand.

---

Her breathing was weak.

---

"The drive..."

---

Marcus leaned closer.

---

"Where?"

---

Her eyes moved toward Khloe.

---

"Don't let them..."

---

She coughed.

---

"Don't let them take the baby."

---

Marcus's heart stopped.

---

"Who?"

---

Evelyn's fingers tightened around his.

---

Then she whispered one name.

---

A name nobody expected.

---

"Theodore."

---

Marcus froze.

---

His grandfather.

---

The man who had been dead for fifteen years.

---

But before anyone could respond...

Evelyn lost consciousness.

---

And the security cameras throughout the mansion suddenly went black.

---

Someone inside the house had disabled them.

---

Someone who knew exactly where they were.

---

May you like

Someone who had been listening the entire time.
