Chapter 14 - What Elias Bought
Gideon found an air pocket near the ceiling.
Clara used a broken timber to pry stones from the blocked shaft.
On the other side, Miriam and Annie Rose dug with their hands.
The water reached Clara’s chest.
At last the stones shifted.
Miriam pulled Annie Rose through the narrow gap first.
Clara followed.
Gideon nearly drowned before they dragged him free.
Edwin escaped toward Millfield with the ledger.
Miriam returned to Denver to delay the trial.
Clara rode home with Annie Rose and Gideon.
The flower shop stood dark.
Thomas’s ranch house was ruined.
The town had begun treating the Hail family as dangerous strangers.
Pete alone opened his door.
He gave Clara a sealed envelope her father had entrusted to him years earlier.
Pete had been instructed to deliver it only if someone accused Elias of taking Vale money.
Inside was a confession.
Elias had accepted payments, but he had used them to compensate families whose wells were poisoned.
He created false invoices through the flower shop to move the money without Silas noticing.
He also paid Ruth to protect James.
The final line cut deepest.
I told myself I was buying time.
In truth, I was spending Thomas’s.
Clara wept for the father she loved and the cowardice he had never escaped.
The letter included a list of families who could confirm the payments.
Most had moved west.
One remained in Millfield.
Sheriff Doyle’s mother.
Mrs. Doyle admitted her husband died from poisoned water.
Elias paid for her children’s food for three winters.
She also revealed her son had hated the Bennett and Hail families ever since learning the truth.
Doyle believed Silas’s money had saved them, not Elias’s deception.
He had served Edwin willingly.
Before Clara could leave, church bells rang.
A crowd gathered in the town square.
Edwin stood on the courthouse steps holding the ledger.
He announced it proved Thomas and Elias had operated the land fraud together.
The crowd shouted for Thomas to be brought back for trial.
Then a prison wagon appeared from the western road.
Thomas and Jacob were inside.
Edwin had moved the trial to Millfield.
