THE WILDFLOWERS OF MILLFIELD / Chapter 11 / 20

Chapter 11 - Annie’s Cradle

The cradle had been stored in the basement of the blue house for twenty-two years.

Wildflowers were carved along the bottom rail.

Clara removed the silver brooch’s pin and inserted it into a tiny hole at the center of one carved blossom.

A hidden panel opened.

Inside lay three glass vials, a hand-drawn map, and the missing pages from Elias Bennett’s journal.

The vials contained cloudy water collected from South Creek.

The journal pages described livestock dying, children becoming ill, and Silas bribing county officials to suppress reports.

The map marked a tunnel beneath Vale land.

At its end was the word ledger.

Jacob read in silence.

Then he found a second document beneath the map.

It was an adoption agreement.

Ruth had been paid by Elias Bennett, not Silas.

Elias intended her to protect James until Thomas could safely reclaim him.

The agreement expired when James turned five.

Ruth had kept him seventeen years longer.

Jacob’s voice broke.

“Why?”

Ruth sat down.

“Because by then I loved you.”

“You loved me enough to own me.”

“I was afraid the truth would take you away.”

Jacob left the room.

Clara followed him into the alley.

He said every adult in his life had used love as an excuse for theft.

Thomas’s love for Annie had kept him faithful.

Ruth’s love had kept Jacob imprisoned in a false name.

Elias’s love for Clara had condemned Thomas to grief.

“Maybe love is just the word people use when they want forgiveness,” Jacob said.

Clara did not defend herself.

She told him only that love without truth became fear.

At the courthouse, Edwin presented forged papers showing Thomas had threatened him over South Creek land.

Bail was denied.

Clara visited Thomas in the city jail.

She showed him the journal pages through the bars.

Thomas barely looked at them.

“Jacob hates me,” he said.

“He hates what was done to him.”

“I am part of it now.”

“You are the one person who did not choose the lie.”

Thomas met her eyes.

“But I may still lose him because of it.”

A guard announced that Thomas had another visitor.

Edwin entered.

He offered Thomas freedom if he signed a statement declaring Jacob was not his son.

Thomas tore the paper in half.

Edwin leaned close.

“Then tomorrow, Jacob will be charged with Ruth’s murder.”

Clara stared at him.

Ruth had been alive an hour earlier.

Edwin smiled.

“She is not anymore.”
