Chapter 15 - The Pendant Thomas Left Behind

The apartment building had been abandoned for eight years.
Its windows were broken.
Graffiti covered the entrance.
Alexander wanted the police to search it first.
Emily refused.
“The police searched it after my father died.”
“They found nothing because they were not supposed to.”
Luca checked every room before allowing them upstairs.
The final apartment had no furniture.
Dust covered the floor.
A dark stain remained beside the window.
Emily stopped at the doorway.
“This is where they found him.”
Noah stood beside her.
“They told us he was hit on Lake Street.”
“They lied about everything.”
Emily entered.
Her pendant grew warm against her skin.
She removed it.
The silver key slid from the bottom.
A narrow opening was visible beneath the windowsill.
The key fit.
A hidden panel released.
Inside was a small cassette recorder.
A child’s red ribbon.
And a second blue ledger.
Emily touched the ribbon.
“I wore this the night of the bridge.”
A memory opened.
She had been twelve.
Her father had carried her from one car to another.
He had wrapped his coat around her.
“Keep your eyes closed, Em.”
“Why?”
“Because I need you to trust me.”
A man had shouted from the rain.
“Thomas!”
Her father had pushed the pendant into her hand.
“Never lose this.”
Emily returned to the present.
Noah pressed play on the recorder.
Thomas Carter’s voice filled the empty apartment.
“Victoria asked me to meet her tonight.”
“She says she will exchange Eleanor’s medical records for the ledger.”
“I know it is a trap.”
“I am recording this because Nora made me promise.”
“There is a duplicate ledger beneath the windowsill.”
“The real evidence is not inside the pages.”
Emily looked at the book.
Thomas continued.
“The binding contains microfilm.”
“The silver pendant is the reader key.”
Alexander took the ledger.
Emily inserted the narrow blade into the spine.
The leather opened.
A tiny strip of film slid into her hand.
Luca used a portable scanner.
Images appeared on his tablet.
Bank transfers.
Audio transcripts.
Photographs.
A security video from the bridge.
Renato stood beside the black car.
Victoria was with him.
Dr. Cole waited in another vehicle.
Marco arrived later.
Thomas pulled Eleanor from the wreck.
A second car accelerated toward him.
The driver’s face became visible for one frame.
Detective Mason Creed.
Emily could not breathe.
“He killed my father.”
“No,” Mara said.
“This was the bridge.”
“Thomas survived.”
The video continued.
Creed exited the car.
Renato shouted at him.
Creed looked toward the concrete barrier where Eleanor had been hidden.
Thomas attacked him.
The recording ended.
Another file showed Thomas entering the abandoned apartment two weeks later.
Victoria followed.
Renato followed five minutes after her.
Creed entered last.
Only Victoria and Renato left.
Creed remained inside for twenty minutes.
Then he carried Thomas’s body through the rear exit.
Noah turned away.
Emily remained still.
Her grief had spent four years asking for a face.
Now it had three.
Alexander touched her shoulder.
She stepped away.
“Do not comfort me.”
“I was not going to.”
“What were you going to do?”
“Ask whether you want them arrested or destroyed.”
Emily looked at him.
“Both.”
Mara copied every file to three secured servers.
Federal investigators received the evidence.
Warrants were issued for Renato, Victoria, Creed, and Dr. Cole.
Creed disappeared from his home.
Cole was captured at a private airport.
Victoria remained hidden.
Renato released a video claiming the evidence had been fabricated by Alexander.
Several board members supported him.
The Moretti board scheduled an emergency vote.
If Alexander was removed, Renato would control the company’s global security network.
He could destroy records.
Move money.
Make witnesses disappear.
Lucian entered the abandoned apartment.
His face was pale.
“Renato took my daughter.”
Alexander stepped toward him.
“When?”
“He wants the microfilm.”
Emily closed the pendant.
“He cannot have it.”
Lucian looked at her.
“He will kill her.”
“My father gave him evidence.”
“He killed my father anyway.”
Lucian’s eyes filled with desperation.
“What am I supposed to do?”
Emily’s voice softened.
“Help us make him believe he won.”
Alexander looked at her.
“You have a plan.”
“I have something better.”
“What?”
“A reputation for being reckless.”
That night, Lucian called Renato.
He offered to deliver Emily and the original microfilm.
Renato chose the executive boardroom at Moretti Tower.
No police.
No security.
No Alexander.
Lucian arrived with Emily shortly before midnight.
The tower appeared empty.
The elevator carried them to the seventy-second floor.
Emily wore her pendant.
A copy of the microfilm was hidden inside it.
The original had already been uploaded.
The boardroom doors opened.
Renato stood at the far end of the long table.
Victoria sat beside him.
Creed stood near the windows.
Lucian’s daughter was tied to a chair.
Renato smiled.
“You brought me the final witness.”
Lucian pushed Emily into the room.
“I brought you everything.”
Renato examined Emily’s pendant.
Then he looked at Lucian’s jacket.
He reached beneath the collar.
His fingers found the wire.
Lucian stopped breathing.
Renato tore it free.
“You also brought me an audience.”
The boardroom doors locked.
Creed raised his weapon.

Victoria looked at Emily.
“This time, there is no waitress coming to save you.”
