Chapter 11 - The Coffin Beneath the Wrong Name

Marco Moretti’s grave was opened before sunrise.
No press attended.
No city official was informed.
Alexander stood beside the cemetery as workers lifted the coffin.
Eleanor remained in the car.
She refused to watch.
Emily stood beneath a black umbrella.
Rain struck the canvas like impatient fingers.
The coffin was brought into a private mausoleum.
Alexander opened it himself.
There was no body inside.
Only sandbags.
Noah stared through the doorway.
“So his father never died?”
Mara shook her head.
“An empty coffin does not prove that.”
Emily used the silver key on a metal box beneath the lining.
The lock opened.
Inside was a video camera.
A medical file.
And a bloodstained handkerchief bearing the Moretti crest.
The camera still contained one recording.
Marco Moretti appeared on the screen.
He looked ill.
His face was thin.
His hands trembled.
“My name is Marco Moretti.”
“If this recording is being watched, my brother has probably told the world I am dead.”
Alexander stepped closer to the screen.
Marco continued.
“Renato and Victoria Harrington used charitable accounts to move money into private security operations.”
“I approved the first transfers.”
Alexander closed his eyes.
Eleanor turned away.
“I believed the funds were protecting our company from extortion.”
“I was wrong.”
“When I tried to end the arrangement, Renato threatened Alexander.”
“He planned to prevent my son from reaching the emergency board meeting on September seventeenth.”
“Eleanor discovered the plan.”
“She contacted Thomas Carter.”
“Thomas agreed to drive her to the authorities.”
Emily covered her mouth.
Marco looked directly into the camera.
“Thomas Carter was not a criminal.”
“He was the bravest man in the room.”
“He saved my wife.”
“He tried to save my son.”
Marco coughed violently.
Blood appeared on the handkerchief.
“Dr. Adrian Cole has been giving me medication.”
“I believe it is killing me.”
“Lucian Price knows some of the truth.”
“He does not know everything.”
“Renato must never find the blue ledger.”
“The original is stored beneath the Harrington Museum.”
“The entrance opens with the silver key.”
Marco leaned closer.
“There is one more thing.”
The recording glitched.
Static filled the screen.
Marco’s final words disappeared.
Alexander turned toward Luca.
“Recover it.”
“I will try.”
Mara examined the medical file.
“These reports show heavy-metal poisoning.”
“Cole signed them as vitamin deficiency.”
Emily looked at Eleanor.
“Why did Marco hide this in his coffin?”
“He suspected Renato would control the estate after his death.”
“Was Marco murdered?”
Eleanor’s voice shook.
“Yes.”
Alexander stared at her.
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“You suspected my father was murdered and hid that too?”
“I had no proof.”
“You had this grave.”
“I did not know what was inside it.”
Alexander looked toward the empty coffin.
“Everyone keeps choosing what I am permitted to know.”
Eleanor’s face tightened.
“I was afraid you would confront Renato before we had evidence.”
“You were right.”
Alexander turned toward the door.
“Because I am confronting him now.”
Renato was no longer at the estate.
The guard assigned to his room had been drugged.
A vehicle had left through the north gate using Lucian Price’s access code.
Lucian woke shortly after Alexander returned.
His first words were a warning.
“Renato will call a board meeting.”
The call arrived ten minutes later.
The Moretti Global board would meet at noon.
The purpose was to remove Alexander as chief executive.
Renato released a statement accusing Alexander of abducting Eleanor.
Victoria appeared before cameras outside her home.
Her wrist was wrapped in a white bandage.
She claimed Emily assaulted her without provocation.
She claimed Alexander threatened her life.
She claimed Eleanor’s declining mental state had been exploited.
Photographs showed Eleanor being taken into the abandoned clinic.
The images had been cropped.
Alexander’s rescue looked like an abduction.
The clinic belonged to Renato’s shell company.
The public believed it belonged to Alexander.
By ten o’clock, Moretti Global shares were falling.
Banks froze Alexander’s private accounts pending an investigation.
The state attorney requested a welfare examination for Eleanor.
Detective Creed obtained warrants for the estate.
Noah watched the news from the kitchen.
“They created all of this in three hours.”
Lucian sat nearby with an intravenous line in his arm.
“They prepared it four years ago.”
Emily placed the blue ledger on the table.
“Then we go to the museum.”
Alexander shook his head.
“Victoria will expect that.”
“She already knows about the key.”
“She may not know we found Marco’s recording.”
Mara entered carrying a newspaper archive.
“The Harrington Museum is holding its annual charity auction tomorrow night.”
“Every donor in the city will be there.”
Emily looked at the headline.
VICTORIA HARRINGTON TO DEFEND FOUNDATION LEGACY.
“She is going to use the gala to destroy us publicly.”
Mara nodded.
Alexander looked toward the original ballroom photograph of Emily protecting Eleanor.
“Then we destroy her in the same room.”
Luca entered.
“Police are at the gate.”
Through the windows, blue lights flashed across the driveway.
An officer spoke through a loudspeaker.
“We have an emergency court order for Eleanor Moretti.”
Alexander’s face went cold.
The officer continued.
“Mrs. Moretti is being removed from this residence pending a competency hearing.”
Eleanor rolled into the room.
She wore a dark blue dress.
Her hair had been carefully arranged.
She held no shawl.
Emily moved toward her.
“You cannot go with them.”
Eleanor smiled faintly.
“Yes, I can.”
“They want to control you.”
“Then they will have to do it where cameras are watching.”
Alexander knelt beside her.
“Mother.”
Eleanor touched his face.
May you like
“You have spent four years protecting me.”
“Now let me become dangerous.”
