Chapter 12 - WALTER'S MONEY
The first public leak did not expose Crewe.
It exposed Walter.
A bank record from 1982 showed a fifty-thousand-dollar payment from a contractor tied to Crewe into Walter Hayes's account.
The headline spread before investigators could explain it.
DECORATED VETERAN PAID AFTER SECRET OPERATION.
Daniel wanted to defend Walter publicly.
Walter said no.
"Because it's false?"
"Because I don't know."
That answer scared Daniel.
Walter remembered the account.
He remembered money arriving.
He had told himself it was compensation for injuries and classified service.
He never asked enough questions.
Records showed forty-eight thousand dollars left his account within days through cashier's checks.
The recipients were families connected to Night Glass.
Two thousand remained.
Walter had used part of it for rent, a transmission repair, and groceries.
Daniel said, "You gave almost all of it away."
Walter replied, "Almost isn't all."
He would not let Daniel turn a compromised act into charity.
Walter had accepted money from people he suspected were buying silence.
Then he redirected most of it.
Both facts mattered.
The scandal cost him invitations to veterans events he had never wanted.
Neighbors looked at him differently.
The Marine from Harrison's called to apologize for accusing him of stolen valor.
Walter accepted the apology but refused the man's attempt to declare him a hero.
"I'm not what you need me to be."
The man answered, "Maybe none of us are."
For once, Walter had nothing sarcastic to say.
Then Raymond produced a recording from 1984.
Walter heard his own younger voice.
"If I ever start saying I didn't know what the money was for, I'm lying."
Walter stopped the tape.
He had forgotten making it.
