Chapter 10 - THE ORIGINAL SIN

Federal investigators reopened Night Glass.
This did not make anyone feel safer.
Voss talked from a hospital bed.
He admitted selling evacuation information to Crewe.
Not because he believed in anything.
Because Crewe paid him.
People disappeared because of those sales.
Voss knew some would die.
He took the money anyway.
Michael left the room.
There was no version of fatherhood that could erase that.
Voss said Thomas discovered him.
Walter confronted him.
Then the compound was attacked by forces who had received the compromised evacuation route.
Thomas was shot.
Walter tried to carry him out.
Voss fled.
Margaret stayed.
Raymond delivered an order to abandon the position.
Walter obeyed after the explosion.
Every person in the chain made a choice.
Crewe sold lives.
Voss sold names.
Raymond carried the withdrawal order.
Walter signed deaths he had not verified.
Margaret hid survivors.
June protected a lie.
Thomas abandoned his son.
The conspiracy survived partly because no single person owned all of it.
Daniel asked who shot Voss.
Voss believed Alan Crewe was still alive.
Crewe had become a respected security executive and veterans donor.
His company sponsored rehabilitation programs, memorials, and scholarships.
Walter had attended one of his events ten years earlier.
Crewe had shaken his hand.
Walter remembered the smile.
That frightened him more than a gun.
Then Voss said something worse.
"Crewe didn't send that warning to Harrison's."
Walter frowned.
"How do you know?"
"Because I did."
"Why?"
Voss looked at Michael.
"I was trying to keep Walter away from my family."
Michael's face hardened.
"Your family?"
Voss closed his eyes.
May you like
He had said too much.
