Chapter 3: The Truth That Couldn’t Stay Buried

The diner doors locked automatically.

Click.

One sound.

Final.

The old woman moved in front of Emily.

Protective.

Weak.

But determined.

“You’re lying,” she said to Thomas.

He finally looked at her.

“No,” he replied. “I’m correcting your version.”

Emily’s breathing was shallow.

“Why am I important?” she asked.

Thomas studied her like a final calculation.

“Because you inherit everything the moment you accept the truth.”

Emily shook her head.

“I don’t want anything from you.”

He smiled slightly.

“That’s what she said too.”

Silence.

Then he added:

“And then she realized she had no choice.”

Emily looked at the old woman.

“Is any of this true?”

The old woman hesitated.

That hesitation said everything.

Emily stepped back.

“You knew.”

Tears filled the woman’s eyes.

“I didn’t know what they would do to you.”

Thomas interrupted calmly.

“You brought her here.”

The old woman broke.

“I wanted her to know her mother wasn’t a coward.”

Thomas nodded.

“She wasn’t.”

A pause.

“She was just smarter than both of us.”

Emily felt like she was falling without moving.

Thomas gestured again.

The guards placed a small device on the table.

A recording began.

Her mother’s voice.

Alive.

Clear.

Final words.

“If you are hearing this, Emily… it means Thomas found you.”

Emily’s breath caught.

“You must not trust him,” the recording continued. “And you must not trust me either.”

Emily froze.

The voice continued:

“Because the truth is not about who loved you.”

A pause.

“It’s about who owns you.”

The recording ended.

Silence swallowed the diner whole.

Thomas looked at Emily.

“And now you have a choice.”

Emily whispered:

“What choice?”

He stepped closer.

“Walk away…”

“…and stay invisible forever.”

A pause.

“Or come with me…”

“…and become the most powerful heir this country has ever tried to bury.”

Emily looked at the letter in her hand.

Then at the old woman.

Then at Thomas.

And finally realized—

this wasn’t a reunion.

It was a transfer of ownership.
