Chapter 4: The Override

“Stand down.”

The federal agent’s voice cut through the courtroom like a blade.

Adrian Wells froze.

Claire Donovan slowly set my son down.

The judge’s hand stopped mid-air above his gavel.

“What is going on?” the judge demanded.

The agent didn’t even look at him.

His eyes were on me.

Only me.

“Mrs. Wells…”

He stepped closer.

“…or should I say, Ms. Carter.”

My breath caught.

“How do you know my name?”

He opened a black folder.

Stamped in red:

CLASSIFIED FAMILY PROTECTION DIVISION

My heart started pounding again.

The agent turned the page.

“Three years ago, you signed a fertility and surrogacy protection agreement under federal oversight.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

“That’s impossible.”

The agent ignored him.

“Because you were never supposed to find out.”

Claire stepped back slightly.

For the first time…

She looked nervous.

The agent pointed at my son.

“That child was never legally adopted.”

Silence.

Then he turned toward Adrian.

“Which means every document you submitted is fraudulent.”

The judge stood up immediately.

“This court does not recognize—”

The agent raised a hand.

“This court is now under federal review.”

The entire room erupted.

Reporters outside the courtroom started screaming.

Phones went up everywhere.

Claire whispered:

“This is not supposed to happen…”

Adrian grabbed the table.

“What did you do?”

I looked at him.

For the first time…

I wasn’t shaking anymore.

“You mean what did YOU do.”

The agent opened the final page.

And read aloud:

“The biological mother retains full custody rights unless voluntarily relinquished under non-coercion.”

He looked up.

“Was she coerced?”

The room went silent.

Claire immediately shook her head.

“No! She signed willingly!”

The agent looked at me.

I smiled.

For the first time in years…

I felt something sharp returning.

Control.

I slowly lifted my hand.

And said:

“I signed under medication.”

Silence.

Adrian snapped.

“She’s lying!”

But the agent had already turned to the medical file.

Then stopped.

Then frowned.

Then read again.

A long pause.

Finally, he spoke:

“The sedation dosage recorded here would make consent legally invalid.”

Claire’s face drained.

“No…”

The agent closed the folder.

And said the sentence that destroyed everything:

“This was not adoption.”

“This was replacement fraud.”

The courtroom exploded.

Adrian shouted:

“You’re destroying my family!”

The agent turned to him.

“No.”

He stepped forward.

“You destroyed it yourself.”

Then he added:

“And you made one critical mistake.”

Adrian froze.

May you like

The agent pointed at me.

“You underestimated the mother.”
