Chapter 15 – Wildflowers

Thomas tucked the last stem into the iron holder. Then he reached over and took Clara’s hand. She laced her fingers through his. Below them, Millfield was going about its Friday business. Behind them, the Wyoming sky was enormous and unhurried.

Annie Rose pulled another wildflower from the bouquet she had not been asked to touch.

“That one was meant for Annie,” Clara said.

Thomas looked at his daughter, who was now attempting to give the flower to a nearby beetle with equal solemnity. He took the flower gently from her hand and set it back at the base of the stone.

“She never minded sharing,” he said.

Clara leaned her head briefly against his shoulder. The Wyoming afternoon held all of them—the living and the remembered—in the warmth of a day that knows it is good.

Thomas Hail bought wildflowers every Friday for three years. He never explained. He just came in, looked at what Clara had, and left with the expression of a man doing something important that no one was watching.

Someone was watching. She just didn’t know yet what she was looking at. It took one question on an October Friday, asked before she had entirely decided to ask it, to change the shape of everything: “Who are they for?”

Annie was never replaced. She was never supposed to be. She remained in the lavender Clara added without being asked, in the book with her opinions in the margins, in the recipe that failed spectacularly on a Sunday evening and made Thomas laugh in a way he had not laughed in years. She was in the name of the dark-haired girl who patted her headstone and said, “I have your name.” And she was in the letter Clara finally sent to Denver—the one Thomas had told her to send because Annie always said the thing most people regret is the letter they didn’t write.

Thomas didn’t stop loving Annie when he started loving Clara. He learned slowly, on Fridays on a hill east of Millfield, that love does not run out. It grows the way wildflowers grow: without being asked, without much fuss, in exactly the places they are needed.
