Chapter 7 - The Voice From the Safe

Nathan listened to his father’s recording alone the first time.
Then he listened again with Grace and Elliot.
Richard Cole’s voice sounded weaker than Nathan remembered.
He had recorded it during the final months of his illness.
“I told myself I was protecting my son.”
“That was a lie.”
“I was protecting my pride.”
Grace looked away.
Nathan did not.
His father continued.
“Charles Whitmore approached me when Nathan was twenty-seven.”
“He knew Grace Bennett was pregnant.”
“He obtained that information through St. Matthew’s.”
Nathan clenched his jaw.
“He told me a child born outside our social circle could be used by investors, rivals, and the press to weaken Nathan’s position.”
“I believed him because his prejudice looked too much like my own.”
Nathan closed his eyes briefly.
Then the recording changed.
Richard began naming people.
A hospital administrator.
A family attorney.
A private investigator.
A corporate banker.
Finally, Victoria Whitmore.
Grace’s breathing stopped.
Richard said Victoria learned about Lily when the child was three.
According to him, Victoria had confronted her father.
Nathan looked at her empty seat across the room.
For one moment, he wondered whether she had tried to help.
Then his father continued.
“She did not ask Charles to stop.”
“She asked him to guarantee Grace would never return.”
Grace lowered her head.
Nathan felt something inside him become cold.
Richard explained that the engagement between Nathan and Victoria had been more than social.
It contained private financial covenants between the Cole and Whitmore family trusts.
If Nathan married Victoria, the Whitmores would stabilize Cole Meridian’s debt.
If he rejected the marriage after formal engagement, certain guarantees could be withdrawn.
Nathan finally understood why his father had pushed the relationship so aggressively.
The romance had not been arranged.
But everyone around it had made sure it became profitable.
Richard’s final words were quieter.
“I tried to undo what I did.”
“I failed.”
“If Grace comes back, do not protect my name.”
“Protect the child.”
The audio ended.
Nobody spoke.
Nathan looked at Grace.
“I’m going public with all of it.”
Grace shook her head.
“Not Lily’s name.”
“No.”
“Not her school.”
“No.”
“Not where we’re staying.”
“I’ll keep all of that private.”
Grace studied him.
“You can lose everything.”
Nathan gave a tired smile.
“I already found the thing they were afraid I would choose over everything.”
Grace looked toward the room where Lily was coloring with Mrs. Alvarez.
Nathan’s phone rang.
The board chairwoman, Margaret Hale.
This time he answered.
“Nathan, if you hold that press conference, the board will suspend you.”
“Then suspend me.”
“You have fiduciary obligations.”
“I have a daughter.”
“Those are separate matters.”
“They stopped being separate when someone used my corporation to hide her.”
Margaret went silent.
Nathan continued.
“I’m releasing the family agreement.”
“You cannot.”
“Why?”
“Because the agreement contains confidential financing arrangements.”
Nathan smiled without humor.
“There it is.”
Margaret’s voice lowered.
“You are angry.”
“No.”
“I’m awake.”
He ended the call.
At 9:03 a.m., Nathan walked onto the front steps of his home.
More than forty reporters waited beyond the security barrier.
Cameras rose.
Questions exploded.
Nathan held up one hand.
The crowd quieted.
“My name is Nathan Cole.”
“This morning, false allegations were distributed claiming that Grace Bennett abducted a child.”
“Those allegations are fabricated.”
“I know that because a certified DNA test has confirmed that the child in question is my biological daughter.”
The reporters erupted.
Nathan continued.
“I did not know she existed.”
“That ignorance was not an accident.”
“It was engineered by members of my family and the Whitmore family.”
Phones lifted higher.
Nathan saw Elliot watching from behind the glass.
Grace stood out of sight.
Nathan reached the point of no return.
“My late father participated.”
“So did Charles Whitmore.”
“And evidence left by my father indicates that my former fiancée, Victoria Whitmore, knew about my daughter years before I did.”
The crowd exploded again.
Nathan raised his voice only slightly.
“I am releasing that evidence to law enforcement.”
“I am also stepping away from executive control of Cole Meridian until an independent investigation is complete.”
Reporters shouted.
Nathan began to turn.
Then one journalist called his name.
“Mr. Cole.”
“Victoria Whitmore is holding her own press conference right now.”
Nathan stopped.
The reporter lifted a phone.
On the screen, Victoria stood beside Charles.
Her eyes were red.
Her expression was wounded.
She spoke into a cluster of microphones.
“Nathan has been manipulated by a woman who has stalked him for years.”
Then Charles held up a folder.
Inside was a psychiatric evaluation bearing Grace Bennett’s name.
Victoria looked directly into the cameras.
May you like
“She is dangerous.”
“And Nathan’s daughter may not be safe with her.”
