Chapter 11 - The Trust Created Before Lily Was Born

Grace stared at the trust document.

“This doesn’t make sense.”

Nathan agreed.

The trust had been created when Grace was barely twelve weeks pregnant.

The beneficiary description named a future female child of Nathan Cole and Grace Bennett.

Grace whispered.

“Your father knew the baby was a girl.”

Nathan looked at the date.

“You didn’t know yet?”

“No.”

“I didn’t have the ultrasound until weeks later.”

Elliot leaned over the paperwork.

“Someone had access to prenatal testing.”

Grace’s face hardened.

“St. Matthew’s.”

Nathan nodded.

The same hospital that had leaked the pregnancy.

The trust contained forty-two million dollars.

The exact amount recently transferred from Cole Meridian.

But the money trail revealed something unexpected.

The funds were not stolen into the trust.

They were being returned to it.

Elliot studied the original instrument.

“Your father funded this trust secretly.”

“Charles Whitmore diverted the money through corporate structures.”

“And last night someone restored it.”

Nathan frowned.

“Who?”

Elliot turned the last page.

The authorization belonged to Margaret Hale.

Nathan sat back.

“The board chair.”

Grace looked confused.

“She tried to remove you.”

“Yes.”

Elliot checked his phone.

“She also appears to have just put forty-two million dollars back into Lily’s trust.”

Nathan called Margaret.

She answered immediately.

“I wondered how long it would take.”

“Why?”

Margaret exhaled.

“Because your father asked me to protect one thing if he failed.”

Nathan looked at Grace.

“Lily.”

“Yes.”

Margaret explained that Richard had secretly funded a trust for the unborn child after Grace disappeared.

He had been ashamed of what he had done.

He could not find Grace.

Charles claimed she had terminated the pregnancy.

Richard never believed him.

“So he created the trust anyway.”

“Yes.”

Nathan’s throat tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because the trust was designed to activate only if Lily appeared.”

Grace whispered.

“And Charles stole it.”

Margaret heard her.

“Yes.”

“He learned about it after Richard’s death.”

“He used shell companies to drain the assets slowly.”

Nathan frowned.

“Then why move it all back now?”

Margaret’s voice became quieter.

“Because once you publicly acknowledged Lily, the trust became legally visible.”

“If regulators discovered it empty, Charles would know I had helped him conceal the withdrawals.”

Nathan went still.

“You helped him.”

Margaret did not deny it.

“I helped hide the missing funds.”

Grace stared at the phone.

“Why?”

“Because Charles threatened the company.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“There it is again.”

Margaret continued.

“I am not asking forgiveness.”

“I am asking you to understand something.”

“Charles is leaving the country.”

Nathan stood.

“When?”

“Tonight.”

“Private flight from Teterboro.”

Grace’s face tightened.

“Victoria?”

“No.”

Nathan frowned.

“Where is she?”

Margaret hesitated.

“She withdrew eight million dollars this morning.”

Nathan looked at Elliot.

Then Margaret added.

“And she bought a ticket under another name.”

Grace stood.

“For where?”

Margaret answered.

“Ohio.”

Grace’s face changed completely.

Nathan saw fear.

“What is in Ohio?”

Grace stared at him.

“My aunt’s house.”

“The one where Lily was born?”

“Yes.”

Nathan’s pulse quickened.

“Why would Victoria go there?”

Grace grabbed her phone.

“Because I left something there.”

Nathan stepped closer.

“What?”

Grace looked at him.

“The originals.”

“Of what?”

“Every threat.”

“Every letter.”

“Every photograph your father’s investigator sent me.”

Nathan stared at her.

“You kept them?”

“I was terrified someone would say I imagined everything.”

“So I made copies.”

“I moved constantly.”

“But the originals stayed hidden inside my aunt’s house.”

Elliot stood.

“If Victoria destroys them, we still have the recordings.”

Grace shook her head.

“One letter was signed by Charles.”

“What did it say?”

Grace’s voice turned cold.

“That if I ever told Nathan about Lily, they would take my daughter and make sure no court believed I was her mother.”

Nathan grabbed his coat.

“You’re not going.”

Grace stared at him.

“Yes, I am.”

“It could be a trap.”

“It probably is.”

“Then absolutely not.”

Grace stepped closer.

“You lost four years because people made decisions for me.”

“Do not start doing the same thing.”

Nathan stopped.

The words landed.

He nodded once.

“Then we go together.”

They arranged federal agents to meet them in Ohio.

Lily remained with Mrs. Alvarez under protection.

Before Grace left, Lily hugged her tightly.

“Come back.”

Grace kissed her forehead.

“Always.”

Lily looked at Nathan.

“You too.”

Nathan crouched.

“That’s the plan.”

Lily frowned seriously.

“No bad plans.”

Nathan smiled.

“No bad plans.”

Three hours later, Nathan and Grace reached the small Ohio house where Grace had hidden during pregnancy.

The front door was already open.

Grace stopped in the yard.

Nathan moved in front of her.

Inside, furniture had been overturned.

Floorboards were ripped up.

The wall behind an old bookcase had been broken open.

Grace ran toward it.

“No.”

The metal box was gone.

Then Nathan saw something on the floor.

A white envelope.

Grace picked it up.

Her name was written across the front in Victoria’s handwriting.

Inside was one sentence.

IF YOU WANT THE ORIGINALS, COME WITHOUT NATHAN.

Below it was an address.

May you like

Grace recognized it immediately.

It was the abandoned maternity wing of St. Matthew’s Hospital.
