Chapter 3: The Broken Engagement

The silence that followed my words was so heavy it felt like the air had been sucked out of the room.

Victoria took two slow steps backward, her high heels clicking weakly against the rug. Her face had gone completely white, her aristocratic composure dissolving into a grotesque expression of horror and disbelief.

"What... what did you just say?" Victoria gasped, pointing a manicured finger at me. "Ethan, she’s lying! She’s a maid! She’s trying to extort you! She probably looked at your old calendar and fabricated this whole story to ruin our wedding!"

Ethan didn't listen to her. He didn't even blink.

He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently cupping the side of Lily’s face. Lily didn't pull away. She stared at him with wide, curious eyes, her small hand reaching out from under her hoodie to press her little fingers against his wrist.

"You have my eyes, little one," Ethan murmured, his raspy voice breaking completely as a single tear ran down his cheek, dripping onto his pristine white collar.

"Ethan Caldwell, listen to me!" Victoria shrieked, her voice dropping all pretense of elegance as she stomped her foot against the marble. "My father invested twenty-five million dollars into your logistics expansion last month! Our families have a contract! You are getting married in three weeks!"

Ethan slowly stood up from the floor.

When he turned to face Victoria, the vulnerability in his face vanished, replaced by an ice-cold, predatory aura that made even me hold my breath. He towered over her, his hands clenched into tight fists at his sides.

"Her name is Rosa Martinez," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, razor-sharp register. "She was a PhD candidate at Columbia. She has more intelligence and dignity in her little finger than you or your family have ever possessed."

"She’s your staff!" Victoria screamed, her cheeks flushing a bright, furious red. "You slept with a servant!"

"I met her four years ago, long before she ever worked here," Ethan countered, taking a slow step toward Victoria. "And four years ago, I made the single greatest mistake of my life by letting my father convince me that a woman's worth was measured by her family's tax bracket."

Victoria backed away until her spine hit the side of the polished grand piano. "Ethan... please. Think about the press. Think about the merger! If you cancel this wedding over a maid's bastard—"

SLAP.

The sharp, cracking sound echoed through the high parlor.

It wasn't Ethan who had struck her.

I had stood up from the floor, placing Lily safely behind my skirts. My hand was still raised, my palm burning from the impact against Victoria’s cheek. My chest was heaving, my eyes burning with a mother's fierce, protective fury.

"Say whatever you want about me, Victoria," I said, my voice dead calm, vibrating with a danger that made the rich heiress flinch. "But if you ever use that word to describe my daughter again, I don't care how many lawyers your father owns—I will personally tear your life apart."

Victoria clutched her red cheek, gasping in utter humiliation, looking at Ethan as if expecting him to call the police on me.

Instead, Ethan walked over to the grand piano. He reached out, took Victoria’s left hand, and smoothly slipped the five-carat solitaire diamond ring off her finger.

He set the ring down on the polished black wood of the piano—right next to the middle C key that Lily had touched moments before.

"The engagement is over, Victoria," Ethan said softly. "Get out of my house."

"My father will destroy you for this!" Victoria screamed, tears of rage finally spilling down her face as she grabbed her designer purse from the table. "You will lose the expansion! You will lose everything!"

"I lost everything four years ago," Ethan replied, turning his back on her and looking toward me and Lily. "I’m just getting it back."

Victoria turned on her heels and stormed out of the parlor, her sharp heels pounding against the marble until the massive front doors of the mansion slammed shut with a thunderous boom that shook the glass chandeliers.

The room went quiet again.

I stood in my grey maid's uniform, holding my crying daughter against my hip, staring at the billionaire who held my past and my future in his hands.

"Ethan," I whispered, my voice trembling as the adrenaline began to fade, leaving behind a cold, overwhelming terror. "What have you done?"

May you like

Ethan took a slow step toward us, his eyes fixed on Lily, then looking up to meet mine.

"I'm going to be a father, Rosa," he said softly. "And whether you forgive me or not... I'm never letting either of you go again."
