Chapter 12: The Unbroken Seal

Silence fell over the courtroom so profound that the ticking of the wall clock sounded like iron striking stone.

Judge Vance closed the manila file sitting on her desk with a slow, deliberate snap that echoed through the room.

"Mr. Sterling," Judge Vance said, her voice dropping into a register of cold, lethal disgust. "In thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a petition as cynical, baseless, and spiteful as the one you have placed before me today."

Victoria's lawyer began to stammer, "Your Honor, the corporate implications—"

"The corporate implications are not the concern of this court!" Judge Vance slammed her hand on the bench. "What is the concern of this court is that your clients used a child as a pawn to retaliate against a failed business deal! The DNA evidence is absolute. The mother's record of care is exemplary. And the father has formally acknowledged parentage and established a trust that guarantees the child's future."

She picked up her fountain pen and signed the order at the bottom of the document with two sharp, aggressive strokes.

"The petition for custody evaluation is dismissed with prejudice," Judge Vance declared. "Furthermore, I am issuing a permanent restraining order prohibiting Victoria Haynes and her family from approaching within five hundred yards of Lily Grace Caldwell or her parents. If your clients so much as look toward that child again, Mr. Sterling, I will personally hold them in criminal contempt."

CRACK.

The wooden gavel struck the block.

"Court is adjourned."

Victoria let out a muffled sob, burying her face in her hands as her mother rushed to pull her toward the side exit, escorted out before the press waiting outside could catch a glimpse of their defeat.

Ethan stood up from the table, walked across the floor, and swept me into his arms right there in front of the empty bench. He spun me around, his face buried in my neck, his chest shaking with silent, overwhelmed laughter.

"You were incredible," Ethan whispered, his raspy voice breaking with pride. "My God, Rosa... you were incredible."

May you like

"I told you," I smiled through my tears, resting my forehead against his as Arthur Vance watched us with a warm, approving grin. "Nobody touches our daughter."
