Chapter 14 - The Old Garage

Matteo knew the building better than anyone.

He disappeared through a service corridor built during Prohibition and reached the underground garage before federal agents sealed the exits.

Santiago knew where he was going.

Not because of strategy.

Because Sophia did.

She signed one word.

Home.

Not the mansion.

The old Moretti estate in Lake Forest.

The property had been empty since Antonio’s death.

The garage there was where Sophia had last seen their father alive.

Matteo wanted something hidden there.

Or wanted to destroy it.

Keller ordered Santiago to stay back.

He refused.

Ruby surprised him by siding with Keller.

“You are emotionally compromised.”

Santiago stared at her.

“You’ve been waiting to say that.”

“For weeks.”

Even Sophia smiled.

Then she signed.

Ruby translated.

“She’s going.”

“No.”

Sophia’s smile disappeared.

Santiago caught himself.

He took a breath.

“Why?”

Sophia signed.

“She says there is something in the garage only she knows about.”

Santiago looked at Keller.

Keller sighed.

“Protective detail. No heroics.”

The old estate looked dead under the winter sky.

Boards covered two windows.

Snow collected along the drive.

Sophia stopped before entering the garage.

Her hands shook.

Ruby stood beside her.

Santiago stayed three steps back.

He wanted to take her hand.

He waited.

Sophia reached back without looking.

He took it.

Inside, dust covered everything.

Old tools.

A rusted workbench.

A burned mark on the concrete where part of the blast investigation had once focused.

Sophia walked to a cabinet.

She pulled it open.

Empty.

Then she knelt and pressed a loose brick beneath it.

A panel shifted.

Behind the wall was a small metal box.

Santiago stared.

“What is that?”

Sophia signed.

“Dad put it there the night before he died.”

Inside they found a digital recorder.

Old.

Battery dead.

Keller’s technician powered it externally.

Antonio’s voice filled the garage.

If you’re hearing this, Matteo found out.

Santiago closed his eyes.

His father continued.

I waited too long to clean up what I built.

That is on me.

Matteo believes fear is loyalty.

I taught him that.

I taught Santiago some of it too.

Santiago looked down.

I am meeting federal prosecutors tomorrow.

I am turning over the financial network and the names of anyone using the family businesses for trafficking, coercion, or medical fraud.

Ruby looked toward Keller.

That was larger than they knew.

Antonio continued.

Sophia deserves a life outside this house.

Santiago does too, whether he knows it or not.

A noise sounded behind them.

Matteo stood in the doorway.

He held the stolen ledger.

And a lighter.

“Turn it off.”

Nobody moved.

Matteo’s eyes were red.

“You think Antonio became a saint?”

Santiago said, “No.”

“That’s the difference between us.”

Matteo laughed.

“You still want his approval.”

“No.”

Santiago looked at Sophia.

“I want her future.”

Matteo’s hand shook.

The lighter clicked.

He held the flame beneath the ledger.

Sophia stepped forward.

Santiago’s body tensed.

She raised one hand.

Then spoke.

“You lost.”

Matteo stared at her.

Sophia’s voice trembled, but she continued.

“You needed me afraid.”

“You needed me quiet.”

“I’m not either anymore.”

Matteo’s face twisted.

For one second Santiago saw the old man beneath the strategist.

A man who had built his entire power around everyone else’s fear.

Keller moved first.

Agents closed in.

Matteo dropped the lighter.

The ledger caught at one corner.

Ruby stamped out the flame with her shoe.

Matteo was handcuffed before he reached the door.

No gunfire.

No blood.

No grand last stand.

Just an old man finally running out of rooms to control.

As agents led him away, Matteo looked at Santiago.

“You’ll become me.”

Santiago said nothing.

Sophia did.

She signed one sentence.

Ruby translated.

“She says only if he stops listening.”

Matteo’s face changed.

Then he was gone.

Santiago looked at his sister.

He thought the story had ended.

But Agent Keller was still listening to Antonio’s recorder.

A final section had not played.

She turned up the volume.

Antonio’s voice returned.

May you like

And this time he said Ruby Brennan’s name.
