Chapter 12 - The Account in Her Mother's Name

Ruby sat down hard.
“My mother died two years ago.”
Agent Keller’s voice remained calm through the speaker.
“I know.”
“She never had that kind of money.”
“We know that too.”
Santiago leaned toward the phone.
“Then why use her name?”
“Because dead or vulnerable people make convenient owners.”
Keller explained.
The Brennan Family Trust had been opened using Ruby’s mother’s identity documents while she was in assisted living.
The mailing address belonged to a law office connected to Matteo.
Money entered the account from shell companies and left within twenty-four hours.
Never to Ruby.
Never to Owen.
It was laundering.
And insurance.
If anyone discovered Owen had copied files, financial records would make him look purchased.
Ruby’s face tightened.
“They were going to say he took a bribe.”
“Yes.”
“And when he disappeared, everyone would assume he ran with the money.”
“That appears to have been the plan.”
Ruby covered her mouth.
Her brother had spent three years hidden because people would have believed exactly what the documents said.
Santiago understood the feeling.
He had believed documents too.
Medical reports.
Authorizations.
Evaluations.
Paper had been the cleanest weapon in the house.
Keller continued.
“The ledger matters.”
“Antonio Moretti was tracking the shell companies before his death.”
Santiago looked at his father’s handwriting.
“He knew Matteo was stealing.”
“More than stealing.”
Keller paused.
“He had scheduled a meeting with federal prosecutors.”
Santiago went still.
“What?”
“He was preparing to cooperate on financial crimes.”
The room changed.
Santiago stared at the ledger.
Their father had been a criminal.
No one in the family pretended otherwise.
But cooperation with federal authorities would have been considered betrayal by half the people around him.
“Matteo found out,” Santiago said.
“That is our working theory.”
Ruby looked toward Sophia.
“So Antonio was killed because he planned to expose Matteo.”
“Possibly.”
Sophia signed.
Ruby translated.
“She says Dad argued with Matteo about leaving ‘the old life’ before he died.”
Santiago remembered those months.
Antonio talking about legitimate hotels.
Property.
A future where Sophia could attend college without security.
Santiago had dismissed it as age.
Maybe it had been an exit plan.
Tomas entered the room quickly.
“Carlo asked for a lawyer.”
Santiago’s expression hardened.
“And?”
“He wants a deal.”
Keller heard through the phone.
“Do not speak to him without us.”
Santiago almost laughed.
“Agent Keller, I have been taking orders from everyone this week.”
“Try it a little longer. It’s improving you.”
Ruby actually laughed.
Sophia did too.
Santiago stared at both women.
“Very funny.”
It was.
And that mattered.
Hours later Carlo sat in an interview room under federal supervision.
He looked smaller without a tailored suit and radio clipped to his shoulder.
Santiago stood behind one-way glass.
Carlo began talking.
Matteo had recruited him ten years earlier.
At first it was money.
Then leverage.
Then habit.
He provided routes.
Medical schedules.
Camera access.
He helped cover the Lakeview transfers.
“Did he order Antonio’s bombing?” Keller asked.
Carlo looked at the table.
“Yes.”
Santiago’s hands curled.
“Did Voss know?”
“Yes.”
“Did you?”
Carlo’s silence answered.
Ruby looked at Santiago.
He did not move.
Keller continued.
“What does Matteo plan now?”
Carlo finally looked up.
“He has a backup.”
“What kind?”
“The family council.”
Santiago frowned.
Carlo said, “If he convinces them Sophia is unstable and Santiago compromised, he can trigger the emergency succession clause.”
“What emergency?”
“Removing Santiago as acting head of Moretti Holdings.”
Keller’s eyes narrowed.
“When?”
Carlo swallowed.
“Tomorrow night.”
Santiago stared through the glass.
Matteo was not running.
He was planning to walk into the family council, call Santiago unstable, call Sophia incompetent, and use the same system one last time.
Ruby whispered, “He thinks she still won’t speak.”
Sophia looked at her.
Then signed one sentence.
Ruby smiled slowly.
“What?” Santiago asked.
Ruby looked at him.
May you like
“She says let him think that.”
