CHAPTER 4

Over the next forty-eight hours, the estate transformed into a strategic war room. Under my direct supervision, Marcus and Mason began receiving intensive detox therapy and IV hydration administered by a trusted, private medical team brought in under heavy guard. Within two days, the grayish tint faded from their skin, their appetites returned, and for the first time in eight months, sound of bright, genuine laughter echoed through the children's wing.

Nathan spent every waking moment watching over them when he wasn't planning his counter strike. The sight of this feared mafia patriarch sitting on the edge of a small bed, reading storybooks with tear-filled, fiercely protective eyes, pulled at something deep inside me that I had locked away for years.

On the third evening, Nathan summoned me to his private study. A massive tactical map of the tri-state area was laid out across his desk, marked with red pins detailing Moretti safehouses, drug routes, and front businesses.

"Marcus and Mason ate a full meal tonight," Nathan said, looking up as I entered. A rare, genuine smile touched his lips. "They asked for you before they fell asleep. They call you their 'guardian angel'."

"I'm just a nanny doing my job, Nathan," I said softly, stepping up to the desk. "How are they doing emotionally?"

"They're kids—they're resilient. Especially now that the poison is clearing out," Nathan said, his smile fading into a fierce seriousness. "Which brings us to our next problem. Victor Moretti doesn't know we've uncovered his plot yet. He thinks Ashford and Gerald are still executing the plan. But Ashford missed his scheduled check-in two hours ago. Moretti will realize something is wrong by morning."

"Then we strike tonight," I said firmly.

Nathan looked at me, impressed. "Gerald’s daughter, Clara, is being held at a heavily fortified shipping facility in the Newark docks. Moretti uses it as his primary distribution hub. It's an iron fortress guarded by thirty armed men. A direct assault would risk Clara’s life—they'd execute her the moment they heard gunshots."

"So we don't use a direct assault," I said, leaning over the blueprint of the Newark facility. "We use a trojan horse."

Nathan’s eyes gleamed. "Go on."

"Moretti expects Dr. Ashford to deliver a progress report on the boys' deteriorating health tonight," I explained, tracing a finger along the dock layout. "We send Ashford in with a heavily encrypted flash drive, supposedly containing the 'final medical data' proving the boys are near death. Ashford will be accompanied by a 'specialist' nurse—me."

Nathan immediately shook his head, his posture stiffening. "No. Absolutely not. It's too dangerous, Sarah. I won't put your life in jeopardy."

"Nathan, look at me," I said, taking a step toward him and looking directly into his eyes. "I'm unremarkable. I'm trained to look invisible. Moretti's men won't see a threat in a woman carrying a medical briefcase. They'll see an easy target. Once I'm inside the command office, I can disable their internal security network from their central server, opening the perimeter gates for Vance and your strike team."

Nathan stared at me, his chest heaving with conflicting emotions—fear for my safety warring with his desperate need to protect his family and rescue Gerald’s daughter. He reached out, his warm, strong fingers gently cupping my cheek. The unexpected intimacy made my heart skip a beat.

"If anything happens to you, Sarah," Nathan whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion, "I will burn this entire city to ash."

"Nothing will happen to me," I promised softly, resting my hand over his. "We finish this tonight."

Two hours later, a black sedan rolled into the dark, rain-slicked industrial yard of the Newark docks. The towering metal shipping containers loomed like gargantuan tombstones under the dim yellow halogen lights.

Dr. Ashford sat in the back seat beside me, trembling violently. A concealed shock-collar was strapped beneath his crisp collar, controlled by Vance, who was monitoring us from a surveillance van two blocks away.

"Remember your script, Doctor," I whispered coldly, adjusting my nurse's uniform and grabbing my heavy aluminum medical kit. "One wrong word, one slip of the tongue, and Vance presses the button."

"I... I understand," Ashford stammered, sweating profusely despite the cool night air.

The sedan pulled up to the main warehouse entrance. Four heavily armed guards in tactical gear stepped out from the shadows, their automatic rifles held at low-ready.

"Vehicle stop!" one guard shouted, shining a high-powered flashlight directly into the windshield. "State your business!"

Ashford rolled down his window, forcing a shaky, arrogant smile. "Tell Victor that Dr. Ashford is here. I have the final status report on the Coleman children."

The guard stared at him for a agonizing five seconds before nodding to his men. "Park by the loading bay. Victor is waiting upstairs."

The trap was set. And we were stepping right into the jaw of the beast.
