CHAPTER 3

The revelation sent a wave of icy tension crashing back through the estate. A traitor was operating inside the walls of the Coleman compound—someone with high-level access who knew every movement of the security team and every detail of the family's daily life.

Nathan immediately placed the entire household staff under total lockdown. The grand ballroom on the main floor was converted into a temporary holding area where twenty-four employees—from kitchen staff to groundskeepers—were gathered under the watchful eyes of armed guards.

I stood beside Nathan on the mezzanine balcony overlooking the ballroom, watching the nervous shifts, the whispered conversations, and the sweat forming on guilty brows.

"Look at their posture," I murmured to Nathan, keeping my voice low. "Guilt manifests in different ways. Some people overcompensate by acting outraged. Others try to become invisible."

"Which one is our snake?" Nathan asked, his eyes scanning the crowd with cold lethaly.

"Notice Gerald," I pointed out subtly.

Nathan’s eyes darted to his trusted house manager, who stood near the grand fireplace, calmly reassuring a panicked young maid. "Gerald? He’s been with my family for twenty years. He was like a father to me after my own died."

"I'm not saying he's the mastermind," I clarified softly. "But look at his left hand. He keeps touching his inner jacket pocket. He’s done it five times in the last three minutes. It’s an unconscious protection reflex. He is carrying something he knows shouldn't be there."

Nathan’s expression darkened into a mask of pure terror and betrayal. Without another word, he turned and marched down the grand staircase, his steps echoing loudly against the marble. I followed close behind.

The room fell deathly silent as Nathan approached. The staff parted like the Red Sea, terrified of the raw fury vibrating off the head of the Coleman empire.

"Gerald," Nathan said, stopping three feet from his oldest confidant.

"Yes, Mr. Coleman?" Gerald asked, his voice steady, though a faint twitch near his eye betrayed his tension. "Is there any update on the boys?"

"Hand me your jacket," Nathan commanded flatly.

Gerald froze. "Sir?"

"Hand. Me. Your. Jacket."

Gerald swallowed hard, his stoic mask finally cracking. For a long, painful moment, nobody moved. Then, with a slow, resigned sigh, Gerald unbuttoned his suit jacket and handed it over to Nathan.

Nathan reached directly into the inner left pocket and pulled out a sleek, burner satellite phone—identical to the model that had sent the encrypted message to Ashford.

Gasps echoed across the ballroom from the staff.

"Why?" Nathan asked, his voice breaking with a devastating mix of grief and rage. "Twenty years, Gerald. You raised me. You held my sons when they were born. Why would you poison my family?"

Tears welled in Gerald’s aging eyes, but his expression turned deeply somber. "I never wanted to hurt the boys, Nathan! I swear to God, I never wanted Marcus and Mason to die!"

"You let Ashford poison them for eight months!" Nathan roared, stepping into Gerald’s space, grabbing him by the collar, and slamming him against the marble pillar. "You watched them wither away!"

"They threatened my daughter!" Gerald sobbed, unresisting as Nathan held him pinned. "They have Sarah! They kidnapped her six months ago! They told me if I didn't let Ashford access the HVAC lines, they would send her back to me in pieces! I had no choice, Nathan! I was trying to find a way to save her without letting the boys die! Ashford promised me the doses were only meant to keep them weak, not kill them!"

Nathan’s grip on Gerald’s collar loosened slightly, his breathing heavy. "Who is 'they', Gerald? Give me a name!"

"The Syndicate," Gerald whispered, his voice trembling with sheer terror. "The Moretti family. Victor Moretti is consolidating power. He wants your empire, Nathan. He knew if your sons died, you would be broken, distracted, and vulnerable. He's coming for everything."

Nathan released Gerald, who sank to his knees on the polished floor, weeping quietly. The heavy truth hung in the air like poison gas. Victor Moretti—Nathan’s most ruthless rival in the criminal underworld—was orchestrating a total, brutal takeover of the Coleman territory, using the slow death of two innocent children as his primary weapon.

Nathan turned to me, his dark eyes ablaze with a terrifying mix of vengeance and cold, calculating resolve.

"They wanted to break me," Nathan whispered, his voice promising war. "They thought I was weak because I was grieving my wife and dying inside for my sons."

He walked over to me, standing close, his hand rising to gently touch my shoulder. "Sarah. You brought my children back from the brink. Now I need to ask you one more thing."

May you like

"Anything," I replied without hesitation.

"Help me burn the Moretti empire to the ground."
