Chapter 20 - The Resonance of Glass

Julian pressed his face against the cold glass of the observation window.

"Clara," he whispered, though he knew the sound couldn't penetrate the triple-paned soundproof glass.

He looked at the second card scanner on the wall. The red LED light on top was blinking steadily, waiting for the secondary authorization signal.

He didn't have Miller's card. Miller’s card was currently burning inside the crushed cabin of the tow truck three miles back on Route 9.

"You can't bypass it, Julian," Sterling said, slumping against the wall, his head dropping to his chest. "It’s a 256-bit encrypted rolling code circuit. If you try to force the door or cut the wires, the solenoid opens instantly."

Julian didn't look at the wires. He looked at the soundproof glass.

Triple-paned, lead-reinforced acoustic glass designed to block all sound up to one hundred and forty decibels.

He remembered his mother’s research notebook from the USB drive: "...every physical material has a natural resonant frequency. When the applied acoustic wave matches the molecular lattice of the barrier, structural integrity drops to zero in under three seconds."

Julian turned around, looking at the heavy steel fire extinguisher mounted on the wall behind him.

He pulled it off the bracket, unscrewed the high-pressure nozzle using his scraper, and exposed the raw brass release valve.

"What are you doing?" Sterling asked, leaning forward, his brow furrowed.

Julian didn't answer. He carried the heavy cylinder to the observation window, setting it down precisely four inches from the center of the glass pane.

He took his scraper, jammed the edge into the steel seam of the brass valve, and looked at the digital timer above the door.

00:02:15.

"Julian, if you break that glass, the gas will spill out into the hallway!" Sterling yelled, scrambling back on his hands and knees. "It’s a sarin derivative! We’ll all be dead in twenty seconds!"

Julian looked through the glass at Clara’s face.

He closed his eyes.

He stopped listening to the timer. He stopped listening to Sterling’s frantic screams. He stopped listening to the storm howling outside the building.

He focused entirely on the microscopic vibration of the glass pane—the faint, sixty-hertz hum generated by the internal air pressure of Room 4.

He adjusted his scraper, aligning the iron blade with the exact angle of the glass frame.

Then, with a single, precise, desperate blow of his palm, he slammed the scraper into the brass release valve while simultaneously screaming at the top of his lungs—hitting the exact, pitch-perfect three-thousand-hertz resonant tone he had heard in the basement pipe four hours ago.

CRACK-THUNDER.

The high-pressure carbon dioxide gas exploded from the extinguisher cylinder, mixing with Julian's vocal frequency, creating an instantaneous acoustic shockwave right at the center of the glass pane.

The three-inch lead-reinforced acoustic window didn't crack.
