Chapter 15 - The Scent of Pine

Dr. Nathan Sterling stood in the creek, holding a heavy black military-grade acoustic emitter in his left hand and a 9mm suppressed pistol in his right.

He wasn't wearing his yellow apron anymore. He was back in his tailored wool coat, his gray hair neatly combed, his gold-rimmed reading glasses dripping with rain.

"I know you can hear me, Julian," Sterling said softly, adjusting the frequency dial on the side of the emitter with his thumb. "You always were my most successful subject. Your mother thought she was protecting you by hiding you in the foster system, but she didn't realize I was the one who wrote the assignment algorithms for the state placement board."

Inside the narrow gap under the boulder, Julian held his hand over Maya’s mouth, their bodies pressed together in the freezing mud.

"Every home you lived in," Sterling continued, his boots crunching on the gravel as he took a slow step closer to the boulder, "had one of my white-noise generators installed in the bedroom wall. We didn't just monitor you, son. We built you."

Julian closed his eyes, his tears mixing with the cold river sludge on his cheeks.

Every memory of his childhood—the quiet foster homes, the strange hum in his bedroom ceiling, the monthly "routine physicals" at the county health clinic—rewound in his mind like a horror movie reel.

He wasn't an orphan who got lucky. He was a long-term laboratory asset.

"Why Clara?" Julian whispered, his voice so low it barely cut through the sound of the rushing water, but he knew Sterling’s high-gain directional mic on the emitter would catch it.

Sterling stopped three feet from the boulder. He lowered the pistol slightly, turning his head toward the dark gap under the granite.

"Because you were reaching your terminal threshold, Julian," Sterling said, his tone almost gentle. "The hyperacusis degrades the temporal lobe by age twenty-three. You were going to break. I needed a secondary biological baseline with the same genetic markers to continue the research. Clara has the exact same auditory sensitivity you had at eight years old."

Maya’s eyes went wide in the dark. She reached out, her small hand covering Julian’s bloody fingers on the slate knife.

"She’s at the clinic in Oak Ridge, Julian," Sterling added, stepping onto the edge of the granite boulder right above their heads. "In Room 4. If you die out here in the cold, she goes into the centrifuge room at 6:00 AM."
