Chapter 6 - RAFAEL

My brother called me that night.

Twelve years disappeared in one ring.

“Mariana.”

I knew his voice immediately.

Older.

Rougher.

Still Rafael.

I sat on the edge of a hotel bed while Camila slept beside me.

Elena had moved us somewhere Daniel didn't know.

“You're dead.”

“Apparently not.”

I started crying.

I hated him for making me cry.

“You let me bury you.”

“I know.”

“Mom died thinking you were dead.”

“I know.”

“Dad stopped speaking for almost a year.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying you know!”

Camila stirred.

I lowered my voice.

“Where are you?”

“Not safe.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“It's the only one I have.”

I walked into the bathroom and closed the door.

“Why does Carmen know you're alive?”

“She helped me disappear.”

My stomach dropped.

“How?”

“Her husband knew people.”

“Dad?”

“Not your dad. Daniel's dad.”

My father-in-law, Ernesto, had spent his career as a customs broker.

Quiet.

Polite.

Always sick now.

Always needing medication I paid for.

Rafael continued.

“I got involved in moving electronics across the border.”

“Smuggling.”

“Yes.”

“You were twenty-eight.”

“I was an idiot.”

“That's not an explanation.”

“No. It's not.”

Good.

At least he knew.

He told me he had stolen from the wrong group.

Ernesto arranged a fake death so Rafael could disappear.

Carmen helped.

Years later, Rafael returned secretly.

He wanted money.

Not forgiveness.

Money.

“How much have you taken from me?”

Silence.

My chest tightened.

“Rafael.”

“Some.”

“How much?”

“Enough.”

I leaned against the sink.

The fake vendor.

The forged signatures.

The mysterious messages.

“Valeria was sending you money.”

“Yes.”

“Daniel knew?”

“Some of it.”

“Carmen?”

“All of it.”

I nearly dropped the phone.

“Why Camila?”

Rafael didn't answer.

“Why were they taking my daughter to Madrid?”

“Because I made a mistake.”

“What mistake?”

“I told someone I had a niece.”

My blood turned cold.

“What does that mean?”

“I used your family as leverage.”

“Against who?”

“Sofía's father.”

I closed my eyes.

“You used my three-year-old daughter in some criminal deal?”

“I didn't think anyone would touch her.”

There it was.

A real mistake.

Not noble.

Not misunderstood.

Selfish.

Stupid.

Dangerous.

“You stay away from us.”

“Mariana—”

“Stay away.”

“I can fix this.”

“You've had twelve years.”

I hung up.

For several minutes, I sat on the bathroom floor.

Then someone knocked.

Softly.

“Mommy?”

I opened the door.

Camila stood barefoot.

“Why are you in the bathroom?”

“I needed a minute.”

She held out her stuffed rabbit.

“You can have Bunny.”

I took it.

That almost destroyed me.

Then the hotel room phone rang.

I answered.

The front desk clerk sounded nervous.

“Señora Salgado, there is a man here asking for you.”

“Name?”

“He says his name is Ernesto Salgado.”

Daniel's father.

I looked through the peephole.

The hallway was empty.

Then Ernesto's voice came through the phone.

“Don't let anyone know I'm here.”

A pause.

May you like

“Especially my wife.”
