Chapter 11 - THE AIRPORT

Daniel made it through the first security checkpoint.

Camila did not.

Not because police stopped them.

Because she threw up.

Later, the airport medic told me she had eaten too many chips and drunk orange soda.

I have never been so grateful for junk food in my life.

Daniel took her to the restroom.

By then, airport security had his photograph.

We found him near Gate 32.

He was holding Camila.

She was crying.

I stopped twenty feet away.

“Camila.”

Her head snapped up.

“Mommy!”

Daniel tightened his arms.

Not violently.

But enough.

I saw it.

So did the police.

“Daniel,” I said, “put her down.”

“You ruined everything.”

“No.”

“You froze the cards. You called lawyers. You brought police into our family.”

“You took our daughter.”

“You were going to take her from me!”

“You did that yourself.”

He looked exhausted.

Terrified.

And for one stupid second, I remembered him at twenty-nine, making pancakes in my first apartment.

I remembered thinking he would be a good father.

Then Camila said, “Daddy, you're squeezing.”

He released her immediately.

That mattered.

Not enough.

But it mattered.

She ran to me.

I dropped to my knees and held her.

Daniel did not run.

He simply sat down in an airport chair.

Police cuffed him.

Camila saw.

She screamed.

“No! Don't hurt Daddy!”

My heart split in two directions.

I wanted him punished.

I wanted my daughter not to see it.

Both could be true.

I carried her away.

As officers led Daniel past me, he whispered, “Check your reserve account.”

“I saw the transfer.”

“No. Check who stopped it.”

I frowned.

He was taken away.

At the airport police office, I opened my banking app.

The transfer had been blocked.

Security intervention.

Requested by:

DANIEL SALGADO.

I stared.

That made no sense.

Elena called the bank.

Daniel had initiated the transfer.

Then canceled it seven minutes later and flagged the account for fraud.

Why?

When I confronted him through his attorney the next day, he refused to explain.

Then Sofía found the answer.

A voice memo on Daniel's phone had automatically synced to our family cloud account.

His voice.

Talking to Carmen.

“I'll make it look like I'm taking the money. Ignacio will follow me, not Mariana.”

Carmen answered, “And Camila?”

“I need her with me or Ignacio won't believe I'm running.”

My hands began shaking.

He had used our daughter as bait.

To protect me.

To save himself.

Maybe both.

The recording continued.

Then Carmen said something that changed everything.

“If Mariana learns you were the one who first gave Rafael access to her laptop, she'll never forgive you.”

Daniel whispered, “I know.”

I stopped the recording.

The room was silent.

He hadn't been dragged into the fraud.

May you like

He had opened the door.
