CHAPTER 2 — The Basement Had Been Hiding the Truth

The leather riding crop slipped from Victoria's hand.

It struck the concrete floor with a sharp crack.

No one moved.

Nathan Harrington stood at the bottom of the basement stairs, unable to recognize the woman in front of him.

This wasn't his wife.

This wasn't the elegant philanthropist who smiled for magazine covers and chaired children's charities.

This was a stranger.

"What..."

His voice barely worked.

"...is this?"

Victoria recovered first.

"Nathan."

Her smile returned almost instantly.

"You weren't supposed to be home until tomorrow."

She stepped toward him calmly.

"It's not what it looks like."

Nathan didn't even look at her.

His eyes remained fixed on the children.

Emma's tiny arms were wrapped around her younger brother.

Both of them were shaking.

The oldest, eleven-year-old Liam, instinctively stepped in front of his siblings.

Protecting them.

The way no child should ever have to.

Nathan felt his chest tighten.

"Liam."

His voice softened.

"Come here."

The boy flinched.

Not because he was afraid of Nathan.

Because he looked at Victoria first.

Waiting for permission.

Nathan's heart broke.

"You don't have to ask anyone."

The words hung in the freezing basement.

Slowly...

Liam took one step.

Then another.

The moment Nathan knelt and opened his arms...

all three children ran toward him at once.

Emma burst into tears.

Jacob buried his face against Nathan's chest.

Liam held on without saying a word.

Nathan wrapped his arms around them.

Then he felt it.

Under Liam's pajama sleeve.

Raised scars.

Old scars.

His blood ran cold.

He gently rolled the sleeve upward.

Purple bruises.

Healing cuts.

Marks that had not appeared overnight.

They had been there for weeks.

Maybe months.

Nathan looked up.

His eyes found Victoria.

"Who did this?"

She folded her arms.

"They're dramatic."

"They hurt themselves all the time."

Nathan slowly stood.

For the first time in twenty years of building billion-dollar companies...

he had never wanted to destroy someone more.

Then Emma whispered through her tears.

"Daddy..."

"Please don't leave again."

"We're good when you're home."

The room fell silent.

Nathan stared at his daughter.

"What do you mean?"

Emma covered her mouth.

Too late.

Victoria's face lost its color.

Because the children had just revealed...

May you like

this wasn't the first time.

It had been happening every time Nathan traveled.
