CHAPTER 3: THE REAL REASON SHE BOUGHT THE ESTATE
The first photo filled the giant screens.
A younger Clara.
Working in the estate's kitchen.
Washing dishes.
Cleaning floors.
Carrying boxes twice her size.
Guests exchanged confused looks.
Then another picture appeared.
An older woman.
Wearing a housekeeper's uniform.
Smiling beside little Clara.
"My mother," Clara said quietly.
The room fell silent.
"She worked here for twenty-seven years."
Another image.
Her mother sitting outside the staff entrance.
Eating lunch alone.
Because employees weren't allowed inside the main dining room.
Patricia shifted uncomfortably.
Clara continued.
"When my mom got sick..."
"She begged to stay on the payroll."
"No one helped."
She looked directly at Patricia.
"You fired her."
Patricia swallowed.
"I don't remember that."
"I do."
Clara's voice never rose.
"I remember driving her home after chemotherapy."
"I remember selling my college textbooks to help pay the bills."
"I remember promising her something."
She looked around the ballroom.
"One day..."
"I'd buy this place."
"So no employee would ever be treated the way she was."
Complete silence.
Even the musicians had stopped moving.
Clara smiled.
"My first decision as owner..."
She nodded toward the manager.
He opened another folder.
"Every employee receives a full year's bonus."
Applause erupted.
Louder this time.
Housekeepers cried.
Servers hugged one another.
Kitchen staff stood frozen in disbelief.
The manager continued reading.
"Full health insurance."
"Paid family leave."
"And a scholarship fund for every employee's child."
People were openly crying now.
Patricia looked around.
No one was looking at her anymore.
They were all looking at Clara.
Andrew whispered,
"You did all this..."
She nodded.
"I wanted today to be about gratitude."
He took a shaky step forward.
"I made a mistake."
"The biggest one of my life."
He reached for her again.
"Please..."
"Can we start over?"
Clara smiled sadly.
"You watched my dress being destroyed."
"You didn't lose me today, Andrew."
"You lost me the moment you stayed silent."
She handed him the engagement ring.
"It's yours."
"It never belonged to me."
Andrew stared at the ring lying in his palm.
The ballroom doors suddenly opened again.
A woman in a business suit hurried inside.
She walked straight to Clara.
"Miss Mason..."
"The board is here."
"They're ready for the vote."
Andrew frowned.
"What board?"
The woman answered before Clara could.
"The board of Mason Hospitality Group."
"The company that just acquired three more luxury resorts this morning."
She smiled.
"And they'll be announcing their new CEO."
Every eye turned toward Clara.
She took one calm breath...
May you like
And walked toward the doors without looking back.
The End... Or the beginning of an empire.
