CHAPTER 3 – THE WEDDING WAS NEVER THE REAL EVENT
The ballroom fell silent.
Clara walked toward the screen.
"My mother worked in this estate for twenty-eight years."
Another photo appeared.
She was cleaning tables.
Serving guests.
Smiling despite looking exhausted.
Clara continued.
"When she became sick..."
"She asked for lighter work."
Patricia lowered her eyes.
Clara looked directly at her.
"You told her she had become a burden."
Patricia's lips trembled.
"I..."
"You also fired her."
The room gasped.
Andrew slowly turned toward his mother.
"Mom..."
"You told me she quit."
Patricia couldn't answer.
Clara nodded toward the manager.
He handed her another folder.
"My mother passed away six months later."
"I made her one promise."
"One day..."
"I would buy this place."
"So no employee would ever fear losing their job because they got sick."
The audience remained completely silent.
Then Clara smiled.
"My first decision as owner..."
She looked toward the staff lined along the walls.
"Every employee working here today receives a full year's salary as a bonus."
People burst into tears.
Housekeepers hugged one another.
Chefs applauded.
Servers covered their mouths in disbelief.
"And starting tomorrow..."
"No employee will ever lose health insurance because of illness."
Thunderous applause filled the ballroom.
Andrew stepped toward Clara.
"I was wrong."
"I should've stood beside you."
"I was afraid of disappointing my mother."
Clara looked at him calmly.
"And instead..."
"You disappointed the woman you asked to marry you."
She removed her engagement ring.
Placed it in his palm.
"I can replace a dress."
"I can buy another venue."
"But I won't rebuild trust that someone else chose to destroy."
Andrew stood frozen.
Patricia whispered,
"Please..."
"Don't leave."
Clara smiled politely.
"I already have."
She turned toward the ballroom doors.
The staff opened them for her.
As she walked out...
Every employee followed behind her.
One by one.
Leaving Patricia and Andrew standing alone in the ballroom they no longer controlled.
