Chapter 21 - THE BALLROOM AGAIN

Emma almost canceled the New York trip three times.
The first was when she packed the dark green gala dress by accident.
She stared at it hanging in the closet.
Same silk.
Same color.
Same dress she wore the night she left.
She took it down.
Folded it carefully.
Then placed it in a donation bag.
The second time she almost canceled was when a society reporter emailed asking whether her attendance meant the Whitmore marriage was "officially repaired."
Emma deleted the message.
The third was when the plane descended over Manhattan and her chest tightened so suddenly Nathan noticed.
He sat across the aisle holding Nora.
They had chosen separate seats because Emma wanted room.
Nathan did not reach across.
"Do you want to land and go straight to the hotel?"
Emma breathed.
"Yes."
"Done."
No foundation office.
No lunch with board members.
No surprise family gathering.
They checked into a hotel instead of the penthouse.
Nathan had his own room.
Eleanor complained.
Emma ignored her.
The foundation event was smaller than the Plaza Meridian gala.
No cameras inside the dinner.
No ballroom dance designed for press.
The organization had changed after the audit.
Independent chair.
Stricter vendor rules.
Separate communications teams.
Emma read the governance report before agreeing to attend.
At seven, she entered wearing a navy dress and the pendant containing the old Whitmore diamond.
Not on her finger.
Nathan saw it immediately.
He said nothing.
That was correct.
Eleanor hugged Emma.
"You came."
"I did."
"I was going to say finally but I enjoy living."
Emma laughed.
People greeted her politely.
A few stared.
One woman asked where she had been living.
"Oregon."
"How rustic."
Emma smiled.
"There are indoor toilets now."
Nathan choked on his water.
The woman wandered away.
"That was cruel," he whispered.
"I learned from New York."
Dinner passed without disaster.
Emma began to relax.
Then the orchestra started.
Her body remembered before her mind did.
Crystal lights.
Nathan's hand on Olivia's waist.
The ring coming off.
Emma's breathing shortened.
Nathan noticed.
"We can leave."
"No."
"Emma."
"I said no."
Nathan nodded.
He did not tell her to calm down.
He did not say this was different.
He waited.
Emma looked at the dance floor.
Couples moved beneath the lights.
Eleanor was dancing with an old family friend.
Nora sat with June near the back, trying to eat a program.
Emma laughed weakly.
The memory loosened.
Nathan stood beside her.
"Would you like to dance?" he asked.
Emma stared.
For a second, she was back at the old gala.
Then she looked at his hand.
Open.
Waiting.
Not reaching.
"Yes."
They walked onto the floor.
Nathan placed one hand at her waist.
Emma's pulse jumped.
He felt it.
"Too much?"
"No."
"Tell me if it is."
They moved slowly.
No cameras.
No Olivia.
No ring.
Halfway through the song, Nora began crying.
Emma pulled away.
"We're done."
Nathan smiled.
"Best possible ending."
They left the floor before the music finished.
Emma took Nora from June.
"Tired?"
Nora buried her face against Emma's shoulder.
Nathan gathered the diaper bag.
A reporter waited near the hotel exit despite the no-media rule.
"Mr. Whitmore! Emma! Is this your public reconciliation?"
Nathan kept walking.
The reporter called again.
"Did you win your wife back?"
Nathan stopped.
Emma's body tightened.
He turned.
"Emma is not a company, contract, or election. Winning is the wrong verb."
Then he left.
Emma stared at him outside the doors.
"That was almost good."
Nathan frowned.
"Almost?"
"A little rehearsed."
"It was not."
"You sounded polished."
"I have media training. I cannot help my curse."
Emma laughed.
Back at the hotel, Nora finally fell asleep.
Nathan stood near the door to Emma's room.
"Good night."
Emma looked at him.
"Stay."
He went still.
"Here?"
"Yes."
"Are you sure?"
Emma smiled.
"Ask one more time and I may change my mind."
Nathan stepped inside.
Nothing about the night was cinematic.
They brushed their teeth in the same bathroom and laughed because Nathan had forgotten toothpaste.
They lay on opposite sides of the bed at first.
Emma stared at the ceiling.
"This feels strange."
"Very."
"I used to think getting back here would feel like going home."
Nathan turned toward her.
"Does it?"
Emma thought.
"No."
His face fell.
She reached for his hand.
"It feels like somewhere new."
Nathan closed his fingers around hers.
They slept.
In the morning, Emma noticed the pale indentation where her wedding ring had once sat was finally gone.
She held her hand up to the window.
Nathan opened his eyes.
"What?"
"Nothing."
Emma looked at the unmarked finger.
Then at the pendant on the nightstand.
"Actually, something."
