PART 2: THE PRICE OF COURAGE

## PART 2: THE PRICE OF COURAGE

Emily forgot about the incident.

At least she tried to.

Life moved fast when you were struggling.

Her mother's medical bills were overdue.

Rent was due in six days.

And her manager had just cut her hours.

Again.

The confrontation with Victor Hale should have been the least of her worries.

But three days later, trouble found her.

She arrived at work and immediately knew something was wrong.

Her manager wouldn't look at her.

Several coworkers stared.

Whispered.

Avoided eye contact.

Finally, she was called into the office.

The manager sighed.

"Emily..."

"What happened?"

He rubbed his forehead.

"We're letting you go."

Emily laughed.

"What?"

"Corporate decision."

"Why?"

The manager hesitated.

Then quietly answered.

"A complaint."

Emily already knew.

Victor Hale.

Of course.

"What complaint?"

"He claims you harassed him publicly."

Emily stared in disbelief.

"You're firing me because I stopped him from assaulting someone?"

The manager looked embarrassed.

"We don't have a choice."

By noon she was unemployed.

Again.

By evening, things got worse.

Her landlord called.

"You still owe last month's balance."

"I know."

"I need payment by Friday."

Emily closed her eyes.

"I understand."

When the call ended, she sat alone in her apartment.

Twenty-seven dollars remained in her bank account.

Twenty-seven.

Her mother walked into the room.

"You lost your job."

It wasn't a question.

Emily nodded.

Her mother sat beside her.

For a moment neither spoke.

Then her mother smiled.

"We'll survive."

Emily wished she believed that.

The next morning, she opened her front door.

A black envelope sat on the floor.

No return address.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

STOP TALKING ABOUT VICTOR HALE.

The blood drained from her face.

A second line had been added.

NEXT TIME, WE WON'T BE POLITE.

For the first time, Emily felt real fear.

Someone had been at her apartment.

Someone knew where she lived.

Someone wanted her silent.

Across the city, Daniel Reynolds was reviewing investigation reports.

The evidence was worse than expected.

Much worse.

Millions of dollars had disappeared through fake contracts.

Bribes.

Fraud.

Money laundering.

And Victor Hale sat directly in the middle of it all.

Daniel's chief investigator looked grim.

"We have enough to destroy him."

Daniel nodded.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

Daniel looked out the window.

"Because if we move now, the others disappear."

"There are others?"

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Many others."

The investigator hesitated.

"What about Emily Carter?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Then he slid the threatening letter across the desk.

The investigator's eyes widened.

"They threatened her?"

"Yesterday."

"What do you want us to do?"

Daniel stood.

His voice became ice cold.

"Protect her."

That evening, Emily noticed something strange.

A black SUV parked across from her apartment building.

Then another.

Then another.

Men in suits stood nearby pretending to check their phones.

She had no idea they were security agents.

She had no idea someone was watching every entrance.

And she definitely didn't know why.

Three nights later, she found out.

May you like

Because someone tried to break into her apartment.
