CHAPTER 1 — THE WRONG SLAP
The slap echoed through the ballroom like a gunshot.
Ethan Hayes didn’t even move at first.
Just stood there.
One hand on his cheek. Eyes locked on his wife.
Olivia Hayes—fifteen years of marriage, now shaking with rage.
“You think I’m stupid?” she shouted. “Do you think I didn’t see it?”
Gasps filled the room.
Phones were already out.
Livestreams already live.
Sophie Lane stood frozen beside Ethan, mascara running, hands trembling.
“I didn’t—” Sophie tried.
“DON’T.” Olivia cut her off sharply. “Don’t you dare lie to me too.”
Ethan finally spoke, low and controlled.
“Olivia, stop. This is not what you think.”
Olivia laughed through tears. “Oh really?”
She pointed at Sophie.
“Then tell everyone why my husband’s assistant has been sitting in his car every night at 11 PM!”
The crowd erupted in whispers.
Sophie shook her head fast. “That’s not— I swear—”
But Olivia didn’t listen.
She grabbed a glass of red wine.
And threw it.
It hit Sophie’s face instantly.
The ballroom went silent again.
Sophie stood there, dripping wine, humiliated.
Then she whispered something so soft only Ethan heard.
“Ethan… please… tell her the truth.”
That line hit him differently.
Olivia saw it.
Her eyes narrowed. “What truth?”
Ethan opened his mouth—
But Sophie suddenly stepped forward.
And whispered something into Olivia’s ear.
Olivia’s face changed.
Not anger.
Confusion.
Then fear.
“What… did you just say?” Olivia whispered.
Sophie looked at her, crying harder now.
“I’m not your problem,” she said. “I never was.”
Olivia stumbled back slightly.
For the first time that night… she looked unsure.
And that’s when Ethan’s phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A single message:
“She’s not the reason your wife is in danger.”
Ethan froze.
Olivia wasn’t looking at Sophie anymore.
She was looking at someone behind Sophie.
Someone who had never spoken the entire night.
A man in a black suit.
