CHAPTER 3: THE TABLE THAT WAS NEVER JUST A TABLE

The restaurant lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then stabilized.

But the atmosphere had changed completely.

People were still eating.

Still talking.

But it felt fake now.

Like none of them were real.

Emily sat back down slowly.

“No. No, this is not happening.”

Brandon looked at Mason differently now.

Less mocking.

More calculating.

“Who are you?” he asked.

Mason didn’t answer.

The waiter did.

“Someone with erased financial lineage.”

Emily laughed nervously.

“That’s not a thing.”

The waiter leaned in.

“It is when your family owns something too dangerous to exist publicly.”

Silence.

Mason finally spoke again.

Low.

Controlled.

“I didn’t want her involved.”

He nodded toward me.

The waiter replied:

“Too late.”

My heart sank.

“What did I get involved in?”

Mason’s voice softened.

“You got engaged to someone who doesn’t legally exist.”

Emily stood again.

“I’m calling someone.”

The waiter didn’t stop her.

He just said:

“Go ahead.”

She hesitated.

Then stepped away.

But the moment she pulled out her phone—

No signal.

None.

Brandon checked his.

Same.

The waiter sighed.

“They already isolated the building.”

My stomach dropped.

Mason stood up slowly.

And for the first time, I saw something behind his calm expression.

Not fear.

Preparation.

He looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

“About what?” I whispered.

He looked at the ring box.

Then at me.

“About your normal life ending tonight.”

A long pause.

Then—

Footsteps outside the restaurant.

Not entering.

Surrounding.

The waiter picked up his tray again like nothing had happened.

But before walking away, he leaned slightly toward Mason.

And said one last thing:

“They sent three teams.”

Mason closed his eyes.

“Of course they did.”

Then he looked at me.

And whispered:

“If I tell you to run… don’t ask questions.”

A beat.

“And don’t look back.”

The front doors of the restaurant slowly opened.

And the first man in black stepped inside.

May you like
