Chapter 3 - The Second Recording

The police arrived before anyone could invent a better lie.
Detective Lena Ortiz wasn't impressed by Evelyn's tears, Victor's title, or Richard's last name. She looked at my lip, my knees, and the red marks along my scalp.
"Who put hands on you?"
I pointed at Evelyn.
Evelyn stared at me like I had broken some sacred family rule.
Maybe I had.
The rule was silence.
"She attacked me," I said. "And I want it documented."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Ortiz noticed.
"You witnessed it?"
He nodded.
"Did you intervene?"
A long pause.
"No."
I didn't look at him.
I couldn't.
Ortiz took my phone only after I showed her that the recording had already backed up to cloud storage and been sent to my sister Maya. Evelyn heard that and went pale again.
Good.
No one was deleting me tonight.
Richard asked Ortiz to listen to the entire file.
So we did.
The first part was what everyone had already heard: Evelyn and Victor talking about planting suspicion on me.
Then came something new.
My original recording had kept running while I walked away from the hallway. I hadn't listened to the last minute.
Victor's voice crackled through the kitchen.
"You move the last eighty by Friday. Then Bellhaven is empty."
Evelyn whispered, "Richard will notice."
"Not before the audit. And when he does, Daniel's authorization is on every transfer."
Then Evelyn said, "What about Claire?"
Victor laughed.
"After tonight, she'll be too busy defending herself."
Every eye in the room turned toward Evelyn.
She sat down hard.
Richard looked twenty years older.
"You were stealing from the company."
"No," she said. "You don't understand."
"Then help me understand."
Her mouth opened.
The recording continued.
A chair scraped in the background. Then Evelyn's voice changed. Softer. Intimate.
"You promised you wouldn't hurt Daniel."
Victor answered, "I would never hurt my son."
Silence swallowed the room.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Richard's face emptied.
Evelyn lunged for my phone even though Ortiz was holding it.
Two officers caught her by the arms.
She screamed, "Turn it off!"
Nobody moved.
Daniel stared at his mother.
"What did he mean?"
Evelyn began to cry.
Not angry tears. Not performance.
Real fear.
"Daniel," she whispered, "please."
Richard's voice came out low and broken.
"What did Victor mean when he called Daniel his son?"
Evelyn covered her face.
And that was the first answer she gave us.
