Chapter 13 - The Father Daniel Never Knew

Daniel learned the truth in an interview room.

Ortiz let Evelyn tell him.

I watched through the glass because Daniel asked me to stay. I almost said no.

Almost.

Evelyn sat across from him with a bandage over her eyebrow.

"Victor is your biological father," she said.

Daniel didn't move.

"Say it again."

She did.

His face changed in a way I will never forget. Not dramatic. Not loud. Something simply left it.

"Did Dad know?"

"No."

"Does Eric know?"

"He does now."

Daniel laughed once, broken and sharp. "Fantastic. Anything else? Am I secretly forty? Is my name even Daniel?"

Evelyn reached for him.

He pulled back.

"Don't touch me."

She froze.

"Victor and I had an affair before I married Richard," she said. "It ended. Then it started again years later. When Victor realized you were his, he used it. At first he wanted access to you. Then money. Then control."

"So you stole from Dad to pay him?"

"Sometimes. Other times I helped him hide what he stole. I kept thinking I could manage it."

Daniel's eyes filled with rage.

"And Claire?"

Evelyn looked down.

"She overheard us. Victor said we needed a distraction. I thought if the family believed she stole five hundred dollars—"

Daniel slammed both palms on the table.

"You hit my wife to protect a lie about my father?"

Evelyn flinched.

"I lost control."

Daniel stood.

"You keep saying that like control is something that fell out of your purse. You chose every step."

I felt those words in my chest.

Because I had said almost the same thing to him.

Afterward, he found me in the hall.

"Claire."

"I'm sorry," I said. "About Victor. About what you just learned."

He nodded.

"Thank you."

Then he looked at my empty ring finger.

"I'm not going to ask you to come home."

"Good."

"I need to become somebody who would have protected you before I ask for anything from you."

For the first time, his apology didn't ask me to fix his pain.

That mattered.

It didn't erase anything.

Ortiz walked toward us holding a folder.

"Daniel, I have good news and bad news. The memory card supports your claim that Victor forged several approvals."

Daniel exhaled.

"What's the bad news?"

"One transfer wasn't forged."

She opened the folder.

"This one was approved from your phone, with your fingerprint, at 2:13 a.m. six weeks ago."

Daniel stared at the page.

Then at me.

"I was asleep at home at 2:13."

I remembered that night.

So did I.

And I remembered who had stayed in our guest room.

Evelyn.
