Chapter 3: The Final Reckoning
I stared at Brooke, still on her knees in front of me.
“You were going to kill me?” My voice was deathly calm.
Her face went white. “Ryan, no… that’s not—”
“Shut up.” I played the recording the detective sent me. Mark’s voice was clear: planning a “tragic accident” for me right after the merger.
Brooke started crying harder. “I didn’t want to… he said it was the only way…”
I looked down at her with pure disgust. “You destroyed me. But you know what? You didn’t break me.”
Two days later, both Brooke and Mark were arrested. The evidence was overwhelming.
I sold the apartment, the cars, everything that reminded me of that fake life. I moved to a quiet house upstate and started a new company — smaller, honest, and mine.
Six months later, I was sitting on my porch when a familiar car pulled up.
It was Brooke. She looked thin, broken, and desperate.
“Ryan… they dropped the charges against me. I have nothing. Please… can we try again?”
I stood up slowly and looked at the woman who once held my whole world.
“No,” I said simply. “I’m finally happy. And you? You’re exactly where you belong.”
She cried as I closed the door.
