The front door slammed so hard the pictures rattled on the wall.
I stood frozen in the living room of our expensive Manhattan apartment, still wearing the suit I’d worn to the biggest pitch of my career.
There she was — my wife of six years — on the couch with my business partner, half-dressed, laughing until she saw me.
“Ryan…” Brooke’s face went pale. “It’s not what it looks like.”
I laughed, a bitter, broken sound. “Not what it looks like? You’re fucking my best friend in our apartment while I was out trying to save our company?”
Mark, my so-called best friend and business partner, stood up slowly, zipping his pants. “Look, man… we were going to tell you.”
“Tell me what?” I stepped closer, fists clenched. “That you’ve been screwing my wife behind my back?”
Brooke stood up, pulling her silk robe tight. Her eyes were cold now, not sorry at all. “You’ve been failing for months, Ryan. The company is sinking. Mark has real money. Real power. I’m not going down with a loser.”
I felt something inside me snap. “After everything I gave you? The house, the cars, the life you always wanted?”
She walked right up to me and smiled like a snake. “You were never enough. I deserve better.”
