Chapter 4 - What Carlo Knew

Carlo Marchetti had been dead for twelve years.

That did not make his secrets harmless.

Teresa told them the story in the chapel.

Fifteen years earlier, Miriam Croft came to her after midnight carrying the brass key and a brown envelope.

"She was shaking," Teresa said. "She told me Gabriel had been accused of stealing from the medical fund. She said it was false."

"What did you do?" Enzo asked.

"I went to Carlo."

Adeline shut her eyes.

Of course.

The house solved problems through the man at the center.

Teresa continued.

"Carlo said Gabriel had confessed. He told me Miriam was trying to protect her husband."

"Did you believe him?"

"Yes."

The word came with shame.

"Then Miriam hid something in the chapel. Carlo saw her leaving."

Enzo looked at the empty compartment.

"Did he open it?"

"I don't know."

Adeline asked, "Did he hurt my mother?"

Teresa's head snapped up.

"No. Miriam left the next morning with you. Carlo gave her money."

"Money doesn't answer the question."

Teresa looked wounded.

Good.

Adeline was tired of old generosity being presented as innocence.

Enzo said, "What was in the brown envelope?"

"Copies of hospital claim cards."

Adeline's heart jumped.

"You saw them?"

"A few. Names. Procedures. Amounts."

"Where did they go?"

"Carlo took them."

Enzo swore under his breath.

The house archive became the next target.

Unlike the medical foundation files, Carlo's private papers had never been fully digitized.

They filled three climate-controlled rooms beneath the library.

Enzo had ignored them for years.

"My father's dead files are not a hobby," he once told Teresa.

Now he opened the first steel cabinet himself.

They searched until dawn.

No hospital cards.

But they found a memo.

Carlo's handwriting.

GABRIEL - DO NOT MOVE HIM UNTIL I GET BACK.

Date: November 6, 2009.

Two days after the red cassette recording.

Adeline stared.

"Move him where?"

Nobody answered.

Another page.

A security log.

Gabriel Vescari brought to Warehouse 9 for internal questioning.

Authorization initials:

E.M.

Enzo's stomach dropped.

Adeline looked at him.

"E.M."

Enzo remembered.

He had been twenty-three.

Angry.

Eager to prove he was not just Carlo's sheltered son.

Vittorio came to him with a story: Gabriel stole from widows and sick children. Carlo was out of town. They needed authority to hold Gabriel until the books were recovered.

Enzo signed a one-page security order.

He never saw Gabriel.

Two days later, Vittorio said Gabriel ran.

Weeks later, police found his body near Gary.

Suicide, they said.

Enzo sat down hard.

"I signed this."

Adeline's face emptied.

"You put my father in that warehouse."

"I authorized questioning."

"You put him there."

Enzo did not hide behind wording.

"Yes."

The truth sat between them.

Then Marco entered holding a forensic report from the red cassette.

"We cleaned up the audio. There's another voice under the distortion."

"Whose?" Enzo asked.

Marco placed the speaker on the desk.

Vittorio's voice.

Arthur Ashford's.

Then a third man.

Older.

Angry.

CARLO: Nobody touches Gabriel until I see the numbers myself.

Adeline stopped breathing.

Enzo stared at the speaker.

His father had been in the meeting.

And the next voice was Gabriel.

GABRIEL: Then tell your brother to stop threatening my daughter.

The recording clicked.

Then Vittorio laughed.

VITTORIO: Your daughter is exactly why you should sign.

The tape ended.

Adeline looked at Enzo.

"They threatened me."

Before he could answer, Marco's phone rang.

He listened.

Then said, "We found Leon Pryce."

"Where?"

"Cook County Hospital. Somebody broke both his hands."
