Chapter 19 - Victoria’s Real Name

Victoria was released after serving most of her sentence.

Quietly.

No reporters waiting.

She used the name Victoria Vale.

Not Sterling.

Not Grant.

Her original legal identity had finally been restored.

She moved into a modest home purchased from legitimate trust funds after restitution obligations.

Then she requested one meeting with Lily.

Lily said no.

A year later, she asked again.

Lily agreed.

Public garden.

I did not attend.

Claire did not attend.

That was Lily’s decision.

Afterward, she told me what happened.

Victoria brought no apology letter.

No jewelry.

No request.

Only a photograph.

Theodore Vale holding two little girls.

Claire at six.

Victoria at ten.

Apparently Theodore had met Victoria secretly several times.

He knew her.

Loved her privately.

Denied her publicly.

On the back he had written:

My girls.

Lily said Victoria cried when she showed it.

Then told her:

“I spent my entire life trying to force people to acknowledge what they already knew.”

Lily asked:

“Was it worth it?”

Victoria answered:

“No.”

Then Lily asked the question nobody had asked clearly enough.

“Why did you marry my father?”

Victoria said:

“At first?”

“Because I wanted access.”

“And later?”

“Because I loved him.”

“Did you love me?”

A long pause.

Victoria answered:

“Sometimes.”

That honesty was brutal.

Better than a beautiful lie.

She continued:

“And sometimes I hated what you represented.”

“Claire.”

“Theodore.”

“Everything I didn’t get.”

Lily stood.

“Thank you for finally saying it.”

Then she left.

No hug.

No reconciliation.

May you like

But no mystery.

For our family, that was almost revolutionary.
