Chapter 14 - Lily Takes the Chair
At nineteen, Lily joined Sterling Meridian’s board.
Not as chair.
Not as CEO.
One seat.
She controlled fifty-five percent but insisted she needed experience before controlling operations.
Half the financial press called her brilliant.
The other half called me her puppet master.
Lily found that hilarious.
“If they saw our breakfast arguments, they’d know better.”
She studied corporate governance.
Accounting.
Trust law.
She made mistakes.
One investment failed.
She admitted it.
That impressed employees more than perfection would have.
Then the board needed a new permanent CEO.
Everyone expected me to remain.
I had founded the company.
My name was on the building.
I declined.
Lily stared.
“You’re leaving?”
“Operationally.”
“Why?”
“Because this entire disaster started with too much family power concentrated in one house.”
“So who runs it?”
An independent executive.
Elena Brooks.
Forty-nine.
Started at Sterling Meridian as a logistics manager fifteen years earlier.
Lily approved.
The company survived without me.
That was strangely humbling.
Claire improved.
Not fully.
Enough to live independently with support.
She and I began having dinner.
Then lunch.
Then one weekend at the old lake cabin with Lily.
People asked whether we were getting back together.
I hated the question.
Claire had lost seven years.
I had lived seven years.
Love does not restore missing time.
We chose not to label anything.
That became our label.
Then Victoria wrote Lily from prison.
Lily refused to read the first letter.
Read the second.
The letter said:
I spent years believing power would make me impossible to abandon.
Instead, I became the person everyone needed protection from.
Your grandfather erased me.
I used that pain as permission to erase your mother.
There is no defense for what I did to you.
Lily folded it.
“What do you think?”
I asked.
“She finally wrote a sentence without blaming someone else.”
