CHAPTER 3 — THE EYES THEY NEVER WANTED TO OPEN
The room froze.
Every heartbeat seemed louder than the monitor.
The nurse stepped closer.
"I definitely saw movement."
Marcus immediately laughed.
"Muscle reflex."
"It happens."
The nurse didn't answer.
Instead...
She pressed the emergency call button.
Within seconds...
The neurologist rushed into the room.
He leaned over me.
"Mrs. Carter..."
"If you can hear me..."
"Blink twice."
I fought through the darkness.
Every muscle burned.
Once...
Then again.
The doctor looked at the nurse.
"She followed the command."
Marcus stepped backward.
"No."
"That's impossible."
The doctor ignored him.
"Mrs. Carter..."
"Can you hear my voice?"
One more blink.
The room exploded with activity.
"Call ICU."
"Cancel the withdrawal paperwork."
"Notify neurology."
Leo burst into tears.
"I knew it."
"I knew you were still here."
Marcus grabbed Victoria's wrist.
"We're leaving."
Before they reached the door...
Ms. Lawson quietly spoke.
"I wouldn't."
Everyone stopped.
She held up another folder.
"The hospital has preserved security footage."
Marcus frowned.
"So?"
"So the police requested it."
"They're reviewing everyone who entered this room..."
"...after the accident."
Victoria's knees almost gave out.
Then Ms. Lawson smiled slightly.
"I also received one more document this morning."
She placed it on the bed.
"The independent mechanic's report."
Marcus stopped breathing.
"What report?"
"The report confirming..."
"...your wife's brake lines had been deliberately cut."
The room fell silent.
A police detective stepped through the doorway.
"Mr. Carter."
"We need you to come with us."
Marcus looked around desperately.
"This is ridiculous."
"No."
The detective answered calmly.
"What's ridiculous..."
"...is believing your wife couldn't hear every word you said."
Marcus slowly turned toward me.
For the first time in twelve days...
I opened my eyes.
Our eyes met.
He didn't look angry.
He looked afraid.
Because the woman he had already buried...
May you like
Had just become the most important witness against him.
SUMMARY
After spending twelve days unable to move or speak following a suspicious car crash, a woman hears her husband and sister plotting to declare her hopeless, seize her fortune, and take custody of her young son. Her nine-year-old secretly contacts her estate attorney, who arrives with a newly filed will that freezes the family's assets and blocks the husband's custody rights if her death appears suspicious. Moments later, doctors confirm the patient is conscious after she responds to neurological commands. An independent mechanic's report reveals her brake lines had been deliberately cut, and police begin treating the crash as a criminal investigation. The husband who believed his wife would never wake up suddenly realizes she heard everything.
