My Son Took Everything… Until I Opened the Farm My Wife Told Me to Trust

CHAPTER 1 – THE KEY SHE LEFT ME

Seven days after I buried my wife, my son looked me in the eye and told me I didn’t belong in his new life.

“Dad, you don’t need a five million dollar penthouse,” Marcus said as he signed papers on the kitchen counter. “You need something quiet. Simple. Like… a farm or something.”

He said it like he was doing me a favor.

The lawyer had just finished reading Jenny’s will. Marcus got the penthouse in Los Angeles. I got a rusted key and a farm two hours north.

That was it.

No sympathy. No pause. Just business.

Marcus’s wife smiled like they had already won the lottery.

“You’ll like it out there,” she said. “Fresh air. Peace. No pressure.”

I looked at them, trying to recognize my own son.

“Your mother just died,” I said quietly.

Marcus didn’t even flinch.

“And she left us what she wanted,” he replied. “Let’s not make it emotional.”

That night, I packed one bag. A photo of Jenny. And a key I didn’t understand.

Before I left, Marcus stopped me at the door.

“Dad,” he said, almost casually. “Don’t make this harder. The penthouse needs space. Contractors are coming tomorrow.”

I stared at him.

“You’re moving in already?”

He shrugged.

“It’s my life now.”

I drove away before I said something I couldn’t take back.

The city faded. Roads opened. Fields replaced buildings.

By the time I reached the gravel driveway, I felt like I was driving into someone else’s memory.

The farm was worse than I expected. Old wood. Broken fence. Silence everywhere.

“This is what you left me for?” I whispered.

Inside the house, dust covered everything.

But then I saw it.

A table.

Clean.

Two sealed envelopes.

And on top of them, Jenny’s handwriting.

“FOR YOU FIRST.”

My hands shook as I reached for the first envelope.

And then I heard something behind me.

May you like

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Someone was inside the house.
