Chapter 9 - My Father's Authorization
Frederick Kessler died five years earlier after a stroke.
Gideon had spent those five years remembering him as difficult, demanding, and fundamentally honest.
The payment authorization complicated the category.
Private surveillance of Mara and infant Sage.
Purpose:
Risk verification regarding potential family claim.
Gideon's first reaction was rage.
His second was a question.
Did Frederick know Sage was his granddaughter?
The investigation found a memo.
Corinne to Frederick:
Mara Ellison alleges Gideon is father of child. No independent test. She is simultaneously threatening historical foundation exposure. Recommend verification before contact with Gideon.
Frederick approved surveillance.
Not disappearance.
Not a threat.
Surveillance.
Still invasive.
Then a later investigator report said:
Child likely biological relation based on timeline. Recommend direct paternity test if family wishes certainty.
Frederick wrote by hand:
Tell Gideon.
Gideon stared at the words.
"He told them to tell me."
Naomi nodded.
"Apparently."
The next memo was from Corinne.
To Frederick:
Gideon currently managing acquisition crisis and fatherhood claim remains unverified. I will handle.
No evidence Frederick followed up before his stroke three months later.
Gideon's anger shifted.
Not vanished.
Specified.
His father had approved surveillance and treated a baby like risk.
He had also eventually written tell Gideon.
Corinne did not.
Again, no pure categories.
Marianne read the memo and cried.
"I blamed Frederick for years."
Gideon looked at her.
"He still approved spying."
"I know."
"You still read Mara's letter and kept it."
"I know."
Responsibility did not transfer cleanly because a new document appeared.
At Ashcombe, Sage had started sleeping without the suitcase strap around her wrist.
That mattered more to Gideon than another family memo.
He asked her therapist how to talk about Mara's investigation.
"Do not tell Sage she saved everyone," the therapist said.
"She carried the notebook here."
"That was a task her mother gave her under pressure. It should not become her identity."
Gideon nodded.
That evening, he sat with Sage on the floor.
"The adults have the notebook now."
"I know."
"You don't have to guard it anymore."
Sage looked toward the suitcase.
"Can I still keep the suitcase?"
"Of course."
"Because Mommy bought it."
"Then it's yours."
She thought.
"Can we put stickers on it?"
Gideon smiled.
"As many as you want."
The next day they covered one corner with ridiculous animal stickers.
A fox.
A shark.
A glittering banana.
The gray suitcase began becoming luggage again.
Then Naomi called.
"We found Mara's last meeting with Corinne."
"Where?"
"Hospital security video. Five days before Mara died."
Gideon's chest tightened.
"What happens?"
"Corinne doesn't threaten her."
"Then what?"
Naomi paused.
"Mara gives Corinne an envelope."
