Chapter 11 - THE HEARING

Our attorney told us not to panic.
I panicked anyway.
James did not.
He handed over Megan's Christmas video, our doorbell footage, Dad's statement, and the messages Lauren had printed.
"She wants reaction," he told me. "We give facts."
The hearing took place four days later.
Lauren arrived in a cream coat with Mom beside her.
That nearly broke me.
Then Mom walked past Lauren and sat behind us.
Lauren turned around so sharply her hair swung across her shoulder.
"Mom?"
Mom looked straight ahead.
"I'm here to tell the truth."
Lauren's attorney tried to paint James as intimidating because of his military background.
Our attorney asked a simple question.
"Did Captain Walker ever touch Ms. Hayes?"
"No."
"Did he threaten physical harm?"
"Not in those words."
"In any words?"
Lauren hesitated.
Then Megan's video played.
The room heard the slap.
Emma's scream.
James saying, "Get out."
Nothing more.
Then our doorbell video played.
It showed Lauren arriving with a camera, provoking Mom, stepping toward Dad, and James saying only, "Back up."
The judge watched without expression.
Finally, he denied the protective order.
Lauren's face turned bright red.
Outside the courtroom, she hissed at me, "You think you won?"
I did not answer.
She stepped closer.
"You took Mom. You took Dad. You poisoned everyone."
I looked at her.
"You hit my baby."
Her eyes flicked away.
For the first time, she had no comeback.
Then Mom approached.
Lauren turned on her.
"This is your fault."
Mom flinched.
"No," she said. "I helped create it. That's different."
Lauren laughed harshly.
"You paid the lawyer."
"Yes."
"You told me Claire was weak."
Mom's face crumpled.
"Yes."
"Then don't pretend you're better than me."
Mom nodded slowly.
"I'm not pretending."
That answer seemed to hit Lauren harder than an argument would have.
She walked away.
We thought the legal nightmare had ended.
It had not.
That afternoon, our attorney received a notice from the bank handling Emma's education account.
Someone had attempted one more withdrawal the night before the hearing.
The amount was ten thousand dollars.
The request had been denied.

The person who submitted it was not Lauren.
It was my mother.
