Chapter 1 - THE SOUND THAT ENDED CHRISTMAS

The slap landed before I could pull Emma back.

My six-month-old daughter screamed.

Not a fussy cry.

Not the tired whimper she made when she wanted to be held.

A terrified, breathless scream that cut straight through the Christmas music and stopped every fork in the room.

For one second, I could not move.

Lauren stood in front of me with one hand still half raised.

My sister looked annoyed, not horrified.

"Oh my God, relax," she said. "It was a tap."

I stared at her.

"You hit my baby."

Emma buried her face against my chest, shaking so hard I could feel it through her red reindeer onesie.

Lauren rolled her eyes.

"She wouldn't stop crying. Kids need to learn."

Across the table, my mother, Margaret, looked down at her plate.

Dad cleared his throat.

My uncle Frank shifted in his chair.

Nobody said a word.

Then James's chair scraped across the hardwood.

My husband stood.

Captain James Walker had spent nine months overseas and had been home for twelve days.

"Get out," he said.

Lauren blinked.

"Excuse me?"

James did not raise his voice.

"You struck my child. You will leave this house. Now."

Lauren laughed, but the sound came out thin.

"This isn't your house."

James looked at my father.

"Then her father can decide whether a woman who hits infants gets to stay for dessert."

Dad's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Lauren turned to Mom.

"Seriously? You're going to let him talk to me like this?"

Mom finally looked up.

"James, everyone is upset. Let's not ruin Christmas."

I felt something inside me crack.

"Christmas was ruined when she hit Emma."

Mom's eyes flashed toward me.

"Claire, don't be dramatic."

James stepped beside me.

"We're leaving."

Lauren smirked.

"Good. Take the screaming baby with you."

James's jaw tightened.

He took Emma's diaper bag from the chair, handed me my coat, and looked at Lauren one last time.

"You will never touch my daughter again."

We walked toward the front door.

Behind us, Mom called my name.

I did not turn around.

Then Dad said something that made James stop with his hand on the doorknob.

"Claire," he said quietly, "before you go, there's something you need to know about Lauren and Emma."

The entire room went silent again.
