Chapter 4 — The Salute

Three months later...
The ceremony took place at Naval Base San Diego.
Rows of sailors stood perfectly still.
The Admiral pinned the Navy Cross onto my dress uniform.
Then he saluted.
This time...
Thousands saluted with him.
Not because of my rank.
Because of what the scars represented.
Afterward, reporters surrounded me.
One asked,
"Commander Reed..."
"What would you say to the people who believed the rumors?"
I smiled gently.
"The truth doesn't always arrive quickly."
"But when it does..."
"It doesn't need revenge."
"It only needs daylight."
My father stood quietly in the back of the crowd.
He never asked to stand beside me.
He knew he hadn't earned that place.
Vanessa sent letters every month.
I never answered them.
Not because I hated her.
Because healing sometimes requires distance.
As I walked toward the harbor, the Admiral caught up beside me.
"Commander."
"Ready to come back?"
I looked across the Pacific.
The same ocean I'd crossed so many times.
Then I smiled.
"I never really left."
Sometimes...
The people who call you a disgrace...
Simply don't know your story.
And sometimes...
May you like
The loudest apology...
Is an Admiral's salute in front of the entire world.
