Chapter 2 — The Hero They Buried

The Admiral looked at my scars.

Then back at the crowd.

"Commander Reed did not abandon her team."

"She saved them."

Whispers spread across the beach.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"There has to be some mistake."

The Admiral ignored her.

He removed a sealed folder.

"The investigation concluded forty-eight hours ago."

He opened it.

"The unauthorized missile strike that killed twelve civilians..."

"...was ordered by Captain Douglas Mercer."

Gasps echoed across the sand.

My father staggered backward.

"But..."

"They said Evelyn..."

The Admiral nodded.

"They blamed the wrong officer."

I quietly looked toward the ocean.

Five years.

Five years of carrying someone else's crime.

The Admiral continued.

"Commander Reed repeatedly refused the illegal order."

"When Captain Mercer overrode her authority..."

"...she entered the impact zone herself."

Someone whispered,

"That's how she got the scars..."

The Admiral looked at me.

"You carried three wounded sailors out of the burning compound."

"You went back twice."

Vanessa's hands began to shake.

"You never told us."

I finally answered.

"I wasn't allowed to."

Military investigations.

Classified missions.

Silence had been part of my orders.

But silence had cost me everything.
