Chapter 19 - What Claire Was Really Protecting
Adrian was arrested.
Three board members followed.
Marcus Hale agreed to cooperate.
Vanessa gave a statement that lasted nine hours.
Noah and Lily came home with me.
For the first time in thirteen months, Claire sat at my kitchen table.
It should have felt like an ending.
It did not.
“Why did Dad need a replacement for me?” I asked.
Claire stared into her coffee.
“I didn’t tell you because I didn’t know if the conditioning could make you dangerous.”
“To who?”
“To Noah.”
My blood turned cold.
Claire slid a folder across the table.
The title read SUCCESSION PROTOCOL.
Our father had believed Carter Medical needed one family member who could assume control if another became mentally or physically compromised.
Not through inheritance.
Through identity.
Adrian took that concept and built the continuity network.
But the original plan was our father’s.
I opened the file.
C-01: Daniel Carter.
C-02: Claire Carter.
C-03 was blacked out.
“Who is three?”
Claire looked at Noah.
“No.”
“Daniel—”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Not Noah.”
I stopped.
“Then who?”
Claire pulled out an old photograph.
Our mother stood in a hospital room holding a newborn.
Me.
Beside her stood another bassinet.
Another baby.
I stared at it.
“I’m not a twin.”
Claire’s eyes filled.
“You were.”
My mouth went dry.
“The second baby died.”
“That’s what Dad told everyone.”
Claire slid a birth record across the table.
Two male infants.
Daniel James Carter.
Nathan Richard Carter.
No death certificate for Nathan.
I looked up.
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“Does Adrian?”
“I think so.”
My phone buzzed.
A voicemail from an unknown number.
I played it.
My own voice filled the kitchen.
Not a recording of me.
A man speaking live.
“Hello, Daniel.”
Claire went white.
The voice continued.
“Adrian was right about one thing.”
I gripped the phone.
“What?” I whispered.
The man laughed exactly like I did.
“Carter Medical only ever needed one of us.”
