Chapter 13 - The Woman Our Father Hid

Claire called Elena “ours.”
It took Hale ten minutes to understand.
It took Vanessa five.
It took me until I found the photograph.
My father stood beside Elena twenty-seven years earlier.
She was holding a newborn.
On the back, in my father’s handwriting:
E.C. — protect her from the board.
Hale whispered, “Elena Carter.”
I stared at him.
“My father had another daughter?”
“Maybe.”
Vanessa looked at me.
“Daniel, Claire knew.”
Of course she did.
Claire always knew the thing everyone else was still trying to name.
We dug deeper.
Elena had been born from an affair before my parents married. My father quietly paid for her education. Later, she joined Carter Medical under her mother’s last name.
Then she married Adrian Voss.
The man who turned our father’s continuity program into a machine for stealing identities.
Elena had been inside the conspiracy from the beginning.
But on which side?
The answer arrived in an encrypted file on Noah’s memory card.
A letter from Elena to Claire.
ADRIAN KNOWS RICHARD IS GOING TO SHUT IT DOWN. HE WILL NOT LET HIM.
The date was two days before my father died.
My father had not died from a stroke.
He had been preparing to expose Adrian.
Elena tried to warn Claire.
Then Elena died in a car fire.
Claire used Elena’s body to create her own legal death.
Not because Elena was convenient.
Because Elena had asked her to.
A second letter explained why.
IF I DIE, LET HIM THINK YOU DIED TOO. IT WILL MAKE HIM CARELESS.
Vanessa shook her head.
“Claire planned all of this?”
“No,” I said. “She adapted.”
That was what Claire did.
She survived by turning every trap into another trap.
Then we reached the final line of Elena’s letter.
THE PERSON ADRIAN TRUSTS MOST IS INSIDE DANIEL’S HOUSE.
Nobody spoke.
I looked at Vanessa.
She stared back at me.
Then Noah said quietly:
“It isn’t her.”
I turned.
“How do you know?”
“Because Aunt Claire told me.”
“When?”
“When she brought me here.”
“What exactly did she say?”
Noah swallowed.
“She said, ‘Your dad will blame Vanessa because that’s what they trained him to do.’”
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
They had not only trained me to sign.
They had trained me to distrust my own wife.
