CHAPTER 2 — The Recording Emma Left Behind

Evan lunged.

The detective moved faster.

Two officers grabbed his arms before he reached Mr. Halden.

"Let me go!" Evan roared.

"That recording is fake!"

The church doors slammed shut.

No one left.

No one even tried.

Mr. Halden calmly handed a small flash drive to the church's audiovisual technician.

"Mrs. Ellis..."

He looked at me.

"Your daughter specifically requested that you decide."

I stared at Emma's coffin.

For one long moment...

I couldn't breathe.

Then I nodded.

"Play it."

The projector hummed to life.

A photograph appeared first.

Emma.

Eight months pregnant.

Smiling weakly.

The date in the corner read:

Seventeen days before her death.

Then the screen turned black.

A voice filled the church.

Soft.

Fragile.

My daughter's voice.

"If you're hearing this..."

"...I'm already gone."

A wave of sobs swept through the pews.

I closed my eyes.

For one heartbeat...

she was alive again.

Emma continued.

"I didn't make this recording because I wanted revenge."

"I made it because I know Evan."

"He'll cry in public."

"He'll call me the love of his life."

"And he'll bring Celeste to my funeral."

Across the aisle...

Celeste's face drained of color.

Evan stopped struggling.

His eyes never left the screen.

The video faded in.

Emma sat inside what looked like her home office.

Dark circles surrounded her eyes.

A bruise, barely hidden beneath makeup, marked her collarbone.

She slowly pulled back the sleeve of her sweater.

More bruises.

Gasps echoed through the church.

"I told everyone I kept falling."

She gave a broken smile.

"I was lying."

The next clip began immediately.

Security camera footage.

The kitchen.

Three weeks before Emma died.

Evan shoved her against the marble counter.

She doubled over, protecting her pregnant belly.

His voice thundered through the speakers.

"If this baby ruins my future..."

"...I'll make sure neither of you has one."

The church erupted.

"No..."

Someone whispered.

"My God..."

Another board member buried his face in his hands.

The footage continued.

Celeste walked into the kitchen moments later.

She looked directly at Emma.

Then smiled.

"You should've signed the divorce papers."

"It would've been less painful."

Emma's voice returned.

"I sent copies of everything to my lawyer."

"My doctor."

"My mother."

"And if you're watching this..."

"...it means I wasn't paranoid."

"I was right."

Silence swallowed the church.

Evan's knees nearly gave way.

One of the detectives slowly reached into his jacket.

"Mr. Evan Vale..."

He unfolded a warrant.

"You are under arrest for domestic violence, conspiracy, witness intimidation..."

He looked toward Emma's coffin.

"...and we are reopening the investigation into your wife's death."

The handcuffs clicked around Evan's wrists.

He looked at me in desperation.

"Margaret..."

"You know I loved her."

I met his eyes without blinking.

"No."

"You loved controlling her."

As officers led him toward the church doors...

Mr. Halden quietly opened one final envelope.

"I believe..."

"...Mrs. Ellis should hear this before anyone leaves."

Every person in the church turned back toward him.

Because according to Emma's final instructions...

May you like

the truth about the baby...

had not yet been revealed.
