CHAPTER 8: The Legacy

Ten years passed.

My mother remained in prison. She had served her sentence and been denied parole twice. The Bennett family had cut all ties with her.

Grandfather passed away peacefully in his sleep at age ninety-four.

Nathan took over the family business. He ran it with integrity. He never asked me for a single favor.

And I?

I built a foundation. A shelter. A place where women who had been betrayed by their families could rebuild their lives.

I kept Grandfather's advice on my desk:

"Stay quiet. People reveal themselves when they believe they've already won."

I watched my mother try to destroy my reputation.

I watched my brother turn against me.

I watched my father stand by while it all happened.

But I also watched Nathan become a better man.

I watched my father find redemption.

And I watched myself become someone I could finally be proud of.

On the anniversary of Grandfather's death, I visited the penthouse one last time.

I was moving into a smaller place. Something simpler.

The penthouse had served its purpose.

It was time to let go.

I stood by the window, watching the sun set over the lake.

And I heard Grandfather's voice in my head:

"I chose you."

I smiled.

"You chose right, Grandfather. I hope you know that."

I left the keys on the counter.

Walked out the door.

May you like

And started the next chapter of my life.

THE END
