CHAPTER 4: The Unraveling

The ballroom emptied within minutes.

Guests fled like rats from a sinking ship. Some called their lawyers. Others called the press. A few simply vanished without saying goodbye.

Within an hour, the glittering wedding reception was reduced to abandoned champagne flutes, wilted roses, and the Bennett family standing frozen in the center of the room.

My mother looked like a caged animal.

My father had retreated to a corner, his face pale and sweaty.

Nathan stood beside Olivia, who was furiously texting someone—probably her own attorney.

And Grandfather?

He sat calmly in his wheelchair, watching them all like a chess player who had already predicted every move.

"Richard," Grandfather said quietly.

My father flinched.

"You knew about the forged medical documents, didn't you?"

My father opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Then nodded slowly.

"I didn't want to," he whispered. "But Caroline said... she said if we didn't do something, you would leave everything to Samantha. She said the family would fall apart."

Grandfather's expression didn't change.

"Did you ever stop to wonder why I chose Samantha?"

Silence.

"Because she never asked me for anything. Not money. Not favors. Not forgiveness. She simply loved me. And that was enough."

My father started crying.

It was the first time I had ever seen him cry.

Caroline turned on him instantly.

"Don't you dare cry! You pathetic man! You let her destroy everything we built!"

I stepped forward.

"Everything we built?"

My mother spun toward me.

"You ungrateful—"

"Grateful?" I laughed bitterly. "Grateful for what? A mother who humiliated me in public? A mother who forged documents to steal my inheritance? A mother who slapped me in front of three hundred people?"

She opened her mouth to argue.

Then the federal investigator stepped between us.

"Caroline Bennett, you are under arrest for fraud, forgery, and attempted financial coercion."

Her face went white.

"Arrest? You can't be serious."

The investigator pulled out handcuffs.

"I'm very serious."

They took my mother away in handcuffs.

She screamed the entire way.

She threatened to sue everyone.

She called my grandfather names I won't repeat.

But she went.

And the moment the doors closed behind her...

The entire room exhaled.

Nathan finally spoke.

"What happens now?"

Grandfather looked at him coldly.

May you like

"Now, you finally grow up."
